Surviving the cold at App State can be a daunting task for many students. With freezing temperatures, snow to trudge through and bone-chilling winds to endure, it can be tough to make it to class everyday if you don’t have the proper tool kit. This article aims to fix that for anyone new to App State or simply struggling to leave the warmth of their bed (which is nothing to be ashamed of!). Here are six ways that you can learn to survive the cold at App State!

1) Invest In Real Cold Weather Wear

Every year at App, there are a few special people who can make it all winter with just some athletic shorts and a hoodie. The likelihood is that you are not one of those people, especially if you are reading this article. So! If this assumption is correct, then you are going to want to purchase some true winter wear. This means several different items: a winter coat, gloves, snow pants and anything else you deem necessary. And no, I’m not just talking about a windbreaker. Of course, winter gear can be a bit on the pricey side but if you look in the right places, you can find some very reasonably priced and effective armor for the cold! And you are gonna need it!

2) Real Men Wear Scarfs (& Beanies)

Never be ashamed of wearing a scarf or beanie! Unlike some stereotypes, both men and women can sport these stylish wears to fight the cold. These nifty accessories are great ways to keep your head, face, ears, and neck warm and out of the wind (which is a must at App State). The campus of App, and Boone in general, is a very windy place so you will want something stylish to block the forceful gusts! And there are many variations and types of scarfs and beanies so you will have plenty of options to choose from!

3) Boots to Trudge With

Continuing on the discussion of apparel and accessories, you are going to need some boots. The snow and sludge at App can be very deep and, to top it all off, after that sludge has sat for a while, it ices over! This can make for some very slippery trips to class so boots that have good grip are a smart choice. Not only will they keep you on your feet, but they can survive some tough terrain and even the rain if you decide on a water proof option (recommended). With the infrequent rain and snowfall at App, nothing will keep your feet warmer and dryer! Plus, you may get some great hiking boots for the many trails around App too!

4) Be a Route Setter

One of the most effective ways to get to class on time at App is by cutting through buildings along the way. Not only does this save time, but it also can keep you warm! Nothing feels better than a few sweet moments of heat when you have you to trek all the way across campus in midwinter. Take some time on a (not so) frozen day to set various routes to your classes that take you through buildings. It can feel like a real life saver and it may spare you some extra steps too!

5) Don’t Be too Quick to Pack Up

The weather at Appalachian State can be very unpredictable. One day it may seem like a blizzard outside and the next day it could be sunny and fifty degrees. Many new comers to App can be thrown off by the weather’s wonky nature and many jump to pack up their winter gear after the first day that isn’t particularly freezing. This is a grave mistake and one that every new “Boonie” should be mindful of. It may be “walk in the park” weather one day, but this doesn’t mean that you won’t be snowed in the day after!

6) The Key is Hot Cocoa

Be sure when winter rolls around to buy some to go cups and start saving, for the months of hot chocolate have arrived! Boone is one of the best places to either further your love of this hot beverage or learn to love it. A cup of hot cocoa will keep your hands warm and your body comfortable as you brace the freezing temperatures. App State is also surrounded by awesome coffee shops so if you don’t have the time or motivation to make some yourself, that’s totally fine! Just stop into Crossroads, Espresso News, The Local Lion or any other great coffee shops that rule the Boone area.

Whether you are new to Boone or a seasoned Mountaineer, these helpful tips can help you get through the harshest of winters at App State! Be sure to follow these easy guidelines and you will be more than prepared for the toughest of weather! App State is an awesome place to be, no matter who you are! And the beautiful snow will make it all the more worth while, not to mention the epic snowball fights you will surely be attending. Welcome to App!
