ASU 101 is a required, one-credit course offered in sections capped at 19 and designed to introduce all new first-time ASU students to the unique elements, culture, challenges, and opportunities of their university. The course covers six core topics: the mission of ASU as the New American University, Diversity and its impact on you, the importance of entrepreneurship/innovation/creativity in supporting your education, the role sustainability plays in your life, the importance of social embeddedness, and the significance of academic integrity.

1) ASU as the New American University

America’s research universities consistently dominate global rankings but may be entrenched in a model that no longer accomplishes their purposes. With their multiple roles of discovery, teaching, and public service, these institutions represent the gold standard in American higher education, but their evolution since the nineteenth century has been only incremental. The need for a new and complementary model that offers access to an academic platform underpinned by knowledge production is critical to our well-being and economic competitiveness.

However, at ASU, we believe that diversity includes additional categories such as socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, veteran status, nationality and intellectual perspective.
