There are many course opportunities students can use towards their degrees. At Baylor University, many people have made successful careers out of their education, such as Jeff Dunham and Willie Nelson. Mathematics majors have many choices when it comes to picking out their courses based on their degrees and interests. Here are 10 math courses students can take at Baylor University.

1. MTH 1220 - Algebra Review

This course is for students who need to make a 61 or better on the ALEKS and are not ready for MTH 1320. Topics include solving equations and inequalities, polynomials, rational functions, exponential functions, and logarithms.

2. MTH 1316 - Geometry and Measurement

This course is a continuation of MTH 1315. Topics included in 1316 will be geometric figures, motions of geometry, and measurement. Students must require the text Mathematics for Elementary Teachers ’ A Conceptual Approach in order to take the course.

3. MTH 1321 - Calculus I 

A simple equation that creates a smiley face and frowning face on a piece of paper.

Students must have a qualifying SAT/ACT score or a B- or better in MTH 1320 or qualifying score on the ALEKS exam.This course is an introduction to the definite integral and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Topics include differential calculus of a single variable.

4. MTH 2316 - Algebra and Functions

This course is a study of the algebraic and transcendental functions which play a primary role in calculus. The main topics include mathematical models and students get the opportunity to practice in lab-based activities and make connections to areas within and outside of mathematics. The course focuses on developing the ability to communicate mathematical ideas to individuals at various levels.

5. MTH 3312 - Foundations of Combinatorics and Algebra

Students must get a grade of C or above in MTH 3300. This course is an introduction to combinatorics and algebra. Topics include elementary counting principles, mathematical syntax, fundamentals of set operations, maps and relations. You will gain a deep understanding of the fundamental properties of the integers and the ring of integers and rings of polynomials.

6. MTH 3318 - Data and Chance

This course is specific for the prospective teacher seeking an EC-4 generalist or a 4-8. Core ideas from probability and statistics, including collection of data and patterns in data. Students will focus on the inference from data, in an active, lab-like environment.

7. MTH 3325 - Ordinary Differential Equations

Topics for this course include differential equations of first order, linear equations of order two and higher. Students will be introduced to power series methods, elements of the Laplace Transform, some facts from linear algebra and systems of differential equations. To be eligible for the course, students must have achieved a C in MTH 2321 or concurrent enrollment in order to take this course.

8. MTH 3370 - Mathematical Methods of Operations Research

This course is a survey of models and methods used in operations research. Topics include linear programming, dynamic programming, and game theory. Students will focus on the construction of mathematical models for problems arising in a variety of applied areas and an introduction to basic solution techniques.

9. MTH 4343 - Topics in Mathematics for Prospective Teachers

This course focuses on prospective middle and secondary school mathematics teachers engage in an in-depth analysis of mathematics. Topics will be focused on the middle and secondary curriculum. In order to take this course, students need to get a grade of C or above in MTH 3312, 3323, or 3350.

10. STA 4387 Introduction to Probability Models

Simple definitions of probability that are used for the course.

This course provides applications of probability theory to the study of phenomena in such fields as engineering, management science, social and physical sciences, and operations research. Topics include Markov chains, branching processes, Poisson processes, exponential models, and continuous-time Markov chains. Emphasis will be placed on the applications to queuing systems, renewal theory, and estimation procedures.

These courses along with many others are great opportunities students can use at Baylor University. Mathematics majors have many career choices for them to pursue. These courses will help ease their ways to earning their degrees at the university. They will be just as successful as the alumni that came before them.
