Being a first-semester college student can be tough. It can also be very stressful; who will be in my classes, will I know anyone, and how hard will the work be. It is always a good idea to set up connections starting on the first day of classes. The best way to make these connections is through use of social media. It is something we all have and all know how to use pretty well so, why not use it for school too? The answer is…use it for school, here are 5 common social media sites to use to set up connections on campus.

1. GroupMe

From the time students arrive on campus for move-in day they are placed into a GroupMe account. The chat has your OWGL (opening weekend group leader), your RA, and the people who live in your hallway. GroupMe is also used for many other organizations on campus. It is a great way to get to know people on your floor and get to know your RA. Also, it is a good communication app for group projects, study groups, and classmates to discuss information.

2. Facebook

Facebook is often used before the school year even starts. There are over a handful of different Facebook groups to become a part of. There is one for each graduating class, individual colleges on campus and one just to find a roommate. Facebook is a great way to make connections on campus from finding your roommate to asking about professors and selling books.

3. Gin System

This app is more geared towards Greek Life. It is commonly used by almost every sorority on campus. It is a way to get updates on the events for the chapter and other chapters on campus. Usually, philanthropies and important information is posted in the app so it’s all in one place. Also, everyones’ schedules and classes are posted in the app to see who is taking or has taken the same classes as you.

4. Snapchat

Snapchat is very beneficial for making connections with college students. It is an easy way of communication between people in the same classes or organizations. It is also a great way to find out what is going on around campus with BGSUs’ Snapchat story. It usually gives daily updates about what’s going on around campus.

5. Instagram

Instagram now has stories just like Snapchat it also has direct messaging. The reason Instagram can be used to set up connections on campus is because of followers. If a person has over 1,000 followers you’re more likely to follow them. This is establishing connections because once you follow one person they tend to follow you back then your chain just grows larger and larger of connections.

These are just a few of the most common social media sites to establish connections at Bowling Green State University. There are many other ways to make connections but, using social media is easier and faster than we would have ever expected.

I am a Freshman at Bowling Green State University. I am involved in Greek Life and other organizations on campus. My major is Gerontology, which is a heavy biology major program. I love adventuring around the town and going to the different events on campus. I'm always open to trying new things and I love to be involved!
