Going to college is stressful as it is. There are so many new possibilities such as Greek life. Should you join as a freshman or first-year student? The answer is YES. In this blog post, here are some tips on going through formal recruitment for a sorority at Bowling Green State University.
1. Go through recruitment as a Freshman
The reason to go through recruitment as a freshman is because it gives you more time in the chapter. These are your lifelong “sisters” or “brothers” and you want to spend a lot of time with them. Also, if you go through recruitment as a freshman you will start making connections earlier in your college career.
2. Make friends in your Recruitment Group
It’s good to make friends in your recruitment group because you will be walking all over Greek Village waiting to go into the houses so, it’s good to make a friend while you stand in line. It is also nice to see if anyone from your recruitment group ends up in the same chapter as you.
3. Don’t talk about what chapter you want to be in
It is best to keep what chapter you want to be in a secret from your recruitment group. Also, be sure to not talk badly about any of the other chapters. The reason not to talk about it is because someone in your group may really like the chapter you hate and by you not liking it you will discourage them.
4. TRUST THE PROCESS
Even if you begin to feel discouraged because your top pick drops you continue to go back. The reason to trust the process is because you will find your “home” if you make the most of all your options and trust the entire process of recruitment.
5. Take notes
At BGSU each person going through recruitment is given a book, it is highly suggested that each person going through recruitment fills this out. Even writing the littlest notes such as the persons’ hair color or what made them stand out. This helps especially after a long day because at the end each person has to pref their chapters.
Formal recruitment is the best way to find your chapter. It is stressful but as long as you follow these tips the entire process should go smoothly, always trust the process and never quit.
