# Math Courses at CSULB

California State University - Long Beach is a public university located in Long Beach, California. **1. MATH 109 - Modeling With Algebra**

Modeling With Algebra, taught by Professor Florence Newberger, is designed to prepare students for algebra. This means that no prior classes are required and students only need an appropriate ELM score or an ELM exemption in order to take this course. Because this class prepares students for more difficult math courses, students will have the opportunity to learn or relearn algebra basics here. Some specific topics include functions, domain, range, visualizing functions, rate of change, slope, modeling data, systems of linear equations, linear inequalities, exponentials, logs, and growth decay.

**2. MATH 470 -Introduction to Partial Differential Equations**

Like the name of the course indicates, MATH 470, taught by Professor Chung Min Lee, is an introduction to partial differential equations. In this course, students will learn about first and second order equations; Cauchy problems; elliptic, hyperbolic, and parabolic equations; boundaries; and initial value problems. The only prerequisites for this course are passing grades in MATH 364A or MATH 370A!

**3. MATH 113 - Precalculus Algebra**

Similar to MATH 109, Precalculus Algebra, taught by Professor Kagba Suaray, is designed to prepare students for a calculus course. Students will learn about topics often used in calculus such as equations, inequalities, functions, graphs, inverses, transformations, theory of equations, matrices, determinants, sequences, series, and more. All you need in order to take this course is and appropriate ELM score or and ELM exemption!

**4. MATH 122 - Calculus I**

Calculus I, taught by Professors Chung Min Lee and Kagba Suaray, is the first course in the three part calculus series. In this course, students will learn about the basics of calculus which includes topics such as continuous functions, derivatives, graphing, optimization, transcendental functions, L'Hospital's Rule, antiderivatives, definite integrals, and area under curves. The only prerequisites for this class are an appropriate MDPT placement or a C or higher in MATH 111 and MATH 113.

**5. MATH 123 - Calculus II**

Calculus II, taught by Professors Ryan Blair, Chung Min Lee, and Kagba Suaray, is the second course in the calculus series, meaning that it picks up where Calculus I left off. Here, students will learn about differential equations, integration techniques, infinite series, convergence tests, Taylor series, parametric equations, and polar coordinates. Just make sure you got a C or higher in MATH 122 first!

**6. MATH 485 - Mathematical Optimization**

Mathematical Optimization, taught by Professor Chung Min Lee, introduces students to the concept of optimization in math. This course covers topics such as linear and nonlinear programming, simplex methods, duality theory, graph theory, Kuhn-Tucker theory, gradient methods, and dynamic programming. The only prerequisites for this course are MATH 323, MATH 347, or MATH 380 in addition to MATH 247.

**7. MATH 224 - Calculus III**

Calculus III, taught by Professors Chung Min Lee, Joshua Sack, Kagba Suaray, and Wen Qing Xu, is the last course in the three part calculus series at CSULB. Some of the specific topics covered in this course include vectors, partial derivatives, Lagrange multipliers, multiple integrals, vector calculus, Green's Theorem, Stokes' Theorem, and the Divergence Theorem. Just make sure you have a C or higher in MATH 123 or MATH 222.

**8. MATH 247 - Introduction to Linear Algebra**

Introduction to Linear Algebra, taught by Professors Jen Mei Chang, Chung Min Lee, Joshua Sack, and Kagba Suaray, is exactly what it sounds like - an introduction to linear algebra! In this course, students will learn about matrix algebra, solution of systems of equations, determinants, vector spaces, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, quadratic forms, and their applications. And the best part? The only prerequisite for this class is MATH 123.

**9. MATH 341 - Number Theory**

Robert Mena, Joshua Sack are the professors for this course. They guide students in exploring transformations, vector spaces, inner product spaces, quadratic forms, similarity and the rational and Jordan canonical forms. Prerequisites include MATH 233 and MATH 247.

**10. MATH 310 - History of Early Mathematics**

Most people don't expect to to learn about history in a math course but in MATH 310, taught by Professor Robert Mena, that's exactly what'll happen! In this course, students will learn about the history of math through the seventeenth century; this includes arithmetic, geometry, algebra, calculus, and interconnections with other branches of math. The only prerequisite is MATH 224, MATH 233, or MATH 247.
