# Math Courses at Central Michigan University

Central Michigan University is a public research university in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. One of the notable alumni from CMU is Dr. Edward Whitmore. He was a mathematics major and later became a professor for the school from 1965 to 1987.

There are many avenues you can take by selecting the right math courses. We provide a list of 10 offered at CMU that you can choose from!

**1. MTH 151 Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I**

This is a course meant for those who want to become elementary teachers specially in teaching math. Students will learn about sets, historical and modern numeration systems. Students will also be taught on operations with natural numbers, rational numbers, elementary number theory.

Admission is limited to only students pursuing a B.S. in Ed., Elementary emphasis. The prerequisite of the course is a C or better in one of: MTH 105, 107, 109, 130, 132. Donna Ericksen is the instructor of the course. The course is worth 3 credits.

**2. MTH 105 Intermediate Algebra**

Intermediate algebra covers rational and radical expressions and equations, integer and rational exponents. Students will learn about functions, graphs, systems of equations, and inequalities. Students will also learn about quadratic equations.

This course satisfies the University Mathematics Competency requirement. This course is offered in an online or hybrid format. In order to register for the course, you must have taken the math placement or successful completion of MTH 101. The professor of the course is Donna Ericksen.

**3. MTH 132 Calculus I**

Calculus I covers limits, continuity, and interpretations of the derivative. Students will learn about differentiation of elementary functions, applications of derivatives, and antiderivatives. You will also learn about Riemann sums, definite integrals, and the fundamental theorem of calculus.

This course may be offered in an online or hybrid format. It is recommended to have already taken MTH 107, 109; or MTH 130. The professor of the course is Reggie Becker.

**4. MTH 133 Calculus II**

Calculus II covers techniques of integration. Students will be exposed to applications of definite integrals, improper integrals, and elementary differential equations. Students will also learn about infinite series, Taylor series, and polar coordinates.

The course is instructed by Reggie Becker. The prerequisite of the course MTH 132 or placement. The course is worth 4 credit hours. This is an essential foundational course for majors such as computer science and engineering.

**5. MTH 217 Business Calculus**

This course covers differentiation and integration of algebraic, exponential, and logarithmic functions. Students will be exposed to calculus applications in business and economics. The student will use the tools as it relates to differentiation and integration.

This course is offered in an online format. It does not however count toward a major or minor in mathematics. The prerequisite of the course is MTH 107 or placement. Reggie Becker is the professor of the course. If you are a business major or have an interest in economics, then this is a suitable course for you.

**6. MTH 101 Elementary Algebra**

Elementary algebra covers the real number system, variables, and algebraic expressions. Students will learn about exponents, Cartesian coordinate system, linear equations, percent, and polynomial operations.

What makes this course unique is that there is an emphasis on word problems emphasized. This course may only be used as a General Elective on the BS degree. You must take a math placement in order to register for this course. The professor of the course is Christal Schoen.

**7. MTH 107 College Algebra**

College Algebra covers complex numbers, introduction to functions and zeros. Students will learn about graphing, linear functions, and quadratic functions. Students will also learn about intersections of graphs, interpreting graphs, inequalities, polynomial and rational functions, algebra of functions.

This course does not count toward a major, minor in mathematics except for students pursuing a B.S. in Ed., Elementary Education. Before you sign up for this course, it is recommended that you have finished MTH 105. Christal Schoen is the instructor of the course.

**8. MTH 223 Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory**

Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory covers systems of linear equations.

Christal Schoen is the instructor of the course. She teaches students about matrices, determinants, vectors, and vector spaces. Students will be exposed to eigenvalues, linear transformations, applications, and numerical methods.

The prerequisite of the course is to have successfully completed MTH 132. If you have taken any linear algebra course in the past, this is a great segway into learning more details about the subject.

**9. MTH 130 Pre-Calculus Mathematics**

Precalculus is a course that covers sets and mathematical induction. Students will learn various math functions. Students will also learn about relations, the theory of equations, and analytic geometry.

This course is approved for offering in a distance-learning format. It is recommended before signing up for the course that students have already taken MTH 107, 109. The course is worth 4 credit hours. The instructor of the course is Christal Schoen.

**10. MTH 232 Linear Algebra and Differential Equations**

This course covers first-order differential equations and systems of linear differential equations. The course also covers matrices and vector spaces. Students will learn about linear transformations and eigenvalues.

This course may not be counted for credits towards the Mathematics major. The prerequisite of the course is MTH 133. Dmitry Zakharov is the instructor of the course. If you have taken a linear algebra course in the past this is a great way to learn about the subject in depth.
