College is all about finding your passion, not having to agree with everyone else’s opinions. Forming your own ideas about topics around the world today. Most students, especially in California and at Chico State, are more Liberal minded. Forward thinking, and ready for change. In the spirit of that, here are a few rallies and petitions every Chico State student is a part of or supports.
1. Keeping Marijuana Legal
In the 2016 election, California decided that the recreational use of marijuana should be legalized. Thus there were celebrations at every college campus. Chico itself has multiple medical and recreational dispensaries in the town. However, within the past few months the city council decided ban all commercial sales of pot, and put heavy restrictions on growers and medical dispensaries. So the students and smokers of Chico banned together and got over 5,000 signatures in less than a month.
2. The Dreamers or Deferred action for Childhood Arrivals
When the White House announced the repeal of the Dreamers Act, DACA was started to help those in need of documentation to stay in the United States. Colleges helped to lead this movement because many Dreamers were in attendance. Chico students held rallies to help out, and event started a Dreamers Center on campus to help Dreamers apply for DACA.
3. Tuition Lowering
Almost every college around the country have been raising tuition costs. At the same time also letting professors go..? Raising many questions as to why tuition needs to be higher if colleges are paying for less instructors. Many professors will bring this up in their classes, even preach it to their students. Chico state is one of these colleges that are in question. So, anyone that petitions to lower tuition would have the support of every single student on campus.
4. Me Too/No Means No
Chico State is one of the more forward thinking in sexual safety, health, and freedom. GSEC, an organization on campus always hosts a No Means No rally during the school year. Inviting all students, and hosting the event as a safe place, showing students where on campus to go for help in dangerous situations.
5. Peace, AntiWar
Chico state was actually one of the first places where the hippie movement and peace rallies started in the 60’s and 70’s. This carries on still today at the campus. Students ban together to try and end violence between countries. However, at the same time Chico State respects and is very thankful for those who gave and those who risked their lives to protect our freedom as well.
With all of the different rallies that go on at college campuses every single day, these were the biggest ones at Chico State. Chico is a very forward thinking city and its students want the United States to become a more equal and fair place for people to safely and peacefully live together in harmony.
Hope it helps! Happy Studies.
