Medgar Evers College is a public college in New York City. It is a senior college of The City University of New York. There are many different math courses to choose from. One of the notable alumni is Iyanla Vanzant, she is a speaker, TV personality, and lawyer. She graduated with law, which proves to be a major that requires math coursework. Here are 10 different math courses that you need to sign up for.

1. MTH 136: Intermediate Algebra and Trigonometry

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for mathematical and physical sciences as well as in such fields as accounting and finance, marketing, and management. The topics covered include rational and polynomial expressions, graphical methods, and solving equations and systems of equations by Cramer's Rule. Students will also learn about the principles of analytic trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, induction, the binomial theorem, progressions, and conic sections.

This is a great universal math course that is applicable to many different majors. The coursework will be focused on applications to various fields. Electronic calculators will be used throughout the course to perform detailed numerical calculations. The instructor of the course is Mohamed Elagib.

2. MTH 009:Arithmetic and Basic Algebra Math I

This course is designed to provide a foundation in the principles and methods of arithmetic and an introduction to basic algebra. Students will learn about number line concepts and diagrams, the arithmetic of whole numbers, integers, common fractions, decimals, and percents. Students will also learn about applications of integers, common factors, basic geometry, formulas, evaluation, ratio and proportions, and solving simple equations in one variable.

This course will use elements of computer-aided instruction but will not be allowed during tests. If you are a student without a lot of math experience or havn't taken many math courses in high school, then this is a great intro course. Jonathan Maitre is the professor of the course.

3. MTH 010: Elementary Algebra Math II

The course is designed to provide students with a solid background in real number algebra. Students will learn about elementary properties of the real number system and number line diagrams. Additionally, students will discuss exponents, polynomials, coordinate systems, graphs, factoring and algebraic fractions, linear and quadratic equations, and their applications.

The course will use computers and calculators as part of the instructional tools. The professor of the course is Jonathan Maitre. If you are a student with very little math experience this is a great course to sign up for.

4. MTH 151: Precalculus

This course prepares students for calculus. Students will learn about the properties of real functions, both analytical and graphical methods will be used. Students will also learn about absolute value equations and inequalities; polynomial, rational, trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions and composite and inverse functions.

This course is instructed by professor Jonathan Maitre. The course is for students who need calculus in their later course work but is applicable to those who are in computer science, life science majors, engineering and so much more.

5. MTH 138: College Algebra and Trigonometry

This course is tailored for students who are majoring in, or who intend to major in, the mathematical sciences, computer science, or environmental science. The topics will be covered include solutions of compound statements including absolute value equations and inequalities, rational and radical equations and inequalities, the algebra of functions, modeling with exponential and logarithmic functions. Students will also learn about systems of linear equations by the Gaussian and Gauss-Jordan elimination methods, nonlinear systems of equations and inequalities, conic sections, and parametric equations.

This course is instructed by professor Wayne Russell. It is perfect for those who are looking for a transitional math course that will be applicable to many majors. The prerequisites of the course are you must test into it by taking the CUNY COMPASS Assessment Tests.

6. MTH 209: Elementary Statistics

This course is designed to provide students with basic statistical techniques commonly used in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. This course is important for many programs of study but especially vital for the nursing program. Students will learn about topics such as tabulation and presentation of data by charts and graphs; description of data using numerical measures: mean, median, mode, percentiles, variance, and standard deviation; description of bi-variate data by scatter diagram, correlation coefficient, and regression line and much more.

If you are a nursing student, this course is required. If you are are a science or business student, then this course will not be open to you. The prerequisites of the course are the successful completion of math 136 or math 138. Trevor Thomas is the professor of the course.

7. MTH 213: Introduction to Statistics

This course introduces students to basic statistical techniques commonly used in data analysis and business operations. Students will learn about tabulation and presentation of data; descriptive statistics; elementary probability theory; binomial and normal distributions with applications to sampling theory. Other topics include the Central Limit Theorem, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, correlation, and linear regression.

This course is not open to students who are in the nursing program or a science major. The Pre-Requisites of the course are successful completion of MTH 136 or MTH 138. Trevor Thomas is the professor of the course.

8. MTH 231: Mathematics for Elementary Educators

This course will provide a calculus-based introduction of probability theory and applications to statistical inference. Students will be introduced to topics in discrete and continuous probability distributions. Students will also learn about moment generating functions, laws of large numbers, limit theorems, sampling distributions, and statistical inference using z, t, f, and c2 distributions.

This course is taught by Trevor Thomas. The prerequisite of the course is MTH 203. The course is specifically made for those who are looking to teach math in elementary schools.

9. MTH 151: Nature of Mathematics I

This course is designed to provide the students in the liberal arts with an introduction to some of the major concepts of modern mathematics. Students will learn about topics such as why and how numbers were invented, history of mathematics; set theory, and Venn diagrams. Students will also learn about comparative study of the algebra of sets, and algebra of numbers, applications to logic circuits; selected topics from number theory; counting and elementary probability; compound interest, discrete and continuous.

The prerequisites of the course is successful completion of MTH 010 or Placement by CUNY COMPASS Assessment Tests for Incoming Students. The professor of the course is Trevor Thomas. What makes this course is so unique is that it is a course that teaches the history of mathematics.

10. MTH 202: Calculus I

Calculus I covers the analysis of functions numerically, graphically, and algebraically. Students will learn how functions are aided by technology, velocity and distance. Students will also learn about Riemann sums, the integral assigned area, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus and Taylor series.

Students will use applications of integrals to problems in geometry and the sciences which makes it a great course for those who are majoring in a science field. The prerequisites of the course are successful completion of MTH 151 with a grade of "C" or better. The professor of the course is Eleanor Holder.
