East Carolina University can be really expensive (especially if you’re living on campus), and you should know what you are paying for. When you pay the estimated $7,143 for tuition, you are paying for more than you think. The top five things that you are paying for are listed below.

1. Classes

The fact that your tuition is paying for your classes is obvious, but you should remember that when you are missing class, you are wasting your money. You should also remember that taking 12 semester hours costs the same as taking 18, so you should make sure to take as many semester hours that you are capable of taking.

2. Student Recreational Center

Whether you go there or not, your tuition is paying for your “membership” at the Student Recreational Center. All students can get into the Center by swiping their card, and you should go to the Center whenever you want since you are paying for it. You can work out, play basketball, go swimming, or even play racquetball. The Center is huge, and it is a very nice facility. Make sure to go there so that your money is not going down the drain!

3. Student Health Insurance

Student Health is very expensive (about $2,000 per semester). You will be charged this if you do not opt out of the insurance by a certain date each semester. If you already have insurance then you do not have to pay this fee each semester, but make sure you contact ECU and opt out of the fee!

4. Educational Technology

There are facilities and buildings all across campus that have educational technology, and you are paying to use this technology. Between the library, classrooms, and buildings such as Mamie Jenkins, you are paying a pricey fee to pay for this technology. Therefore, if you feel the need to print something or get on a computer, feel free to. You are paying for this technology!

5. Student Activities

East Carolina University holds many events across campus, such as Raid The Rec, that many students attend. These events typically have free food, free shirts, and other freebies. Make sure that you attend as many of these events that you can, as your tuition is paying for these events!

East Carolina University does not make it very clear exactly what your tuition and fees are going towards, but make sure that you are using everything that is given to you. Otherwise, you are utterly wasting your money away to the university.
