The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at ECU offers one of the most unique degrees in urban and regional planning. Many universities do not offer the degree, and ECU is one of the best that do. There are many reasons to choose ECU to major in this degree, but the following are the top 5 reasons why:

1. Planning Accreditation Board

Believe it or not, but there are only 15 institutions that are accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board, and ECU is one of them. In fact, it is the only accredited planning program in all of North Carolina. The degree is truly unique, and this is one of the many reasons why you should major in urban and regional planning at ECU.

2. Over 50 Years History

Not only is ECU the only accredited planning program in North Carolina, but the program has been alive for over 50 years. ECU has experience with the degree, so every student gets an exceptional education. Many students have come through and received this degree at ECU, and most have ended up having a very successful career in the world.

3. Over 1,000 students

There have been over 1,000 students to get a degree in planning at ECU over the course of the rich 50+ history of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. These students either majored or minored in a planning program, or they graduated from the graduate program with a concentration in planning. That may not seem like a lot in over 50 years, but it is an amazing number considering how unknown the degree truly is.

4. High Success Rate

Almost every single student that graduates with a degree from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at ECU goes on to be highly successful. Graduates are always prepared to pass the AICP within five years of graduating, and they are qualified to become directors of local planning within seven years of graduating. Above this, some graduates even receive state and/or national awards within ten years of graduating!

5. Curriculum

The curriculum is based on a concern for human and environmental ideas, and this specific curriculum allows graduates to be so successful. The professors use an interdisciplinary approach, and there is an emphasis on how to face issues in society with professionalism. Students love this curriculum, and it helps foster their thinking to aid them in having success with their careers.
