The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies offers and amazing and unique degree in Philosophy at ECU. The degree has produced many successful graduates, offers many different scholarships, and provides many needed opportunities to students. There are many reasons to major in Philosophy at ECU, and five of these reasons are as follows:

1. Alumni

The alumni that have graduates from ECU with a Philosophy degree have gone on to be extremely successful. One example of one of these graduates is Billy Atwell. Mr. Atwell is currently serving as a Director of Communications for the Diocese of Raleigh. He has had much success since graduating from ECU in 2008, and he proves that anyone can have success with a Philosophy degree from ECU.

2. Internship Opportunities

The department offers many different internship opportunities for students while they are in school, and students can often times earn academic credit for being an intern. In fact, if you major in Philosophy you will take a class that requires you to be an intern for the class. But, there are additional opportunities than just the class. Being an intern will look amazing on your resume and scholarship opportunities, and ECU allows you to become an intern when majoring in Philosophy.

3. Your Career

When you major in Philosophy at ECU, you have many different opportunities when it comes to your career after you graduate. Philosophy does not only teach you one skill set, but it instead teaches you how to think critically, learn, and flourish. In fact, only 5% of Philosophy majors were unemployed in 2015 after 6 months of graduation. That is an exceptional number and an almost guarantee that you will find a job.

4. Philosophy Club

The Philosophy Club at ECU is open to all majors, but most of the members major or minor in Philosophy and has some level of Philosophical knowledge. The club meets bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 5 PM, and they discuss different Philosophical ideas. The club is a great way to become a part of the Philosophy department and make many friends with similar minds to you.

5. Scholarships

Majoring in Philosophy could have a strong impact on the number of scholarships you could receive in the long run. Not only are there unique ECU scholarships for Philosophy majors, but there are also National and International scholarships for Philosophy majors. It can help you go to ECU and be debt free by majoring in Philosophy!


Most of the students who major in Philosophy at ECU go on and be successful, and they have lots of fun while in school. Between the Philosophy club and gaining Philosophical knowledge, Philosophy students have the time of their lives while in college.
