Study abroad

Over 80% of all Elon students study abroad at least once during their tenure at the university. Elon prides themselves on this statistic as even the sports programs engage in studying abroad visiting places such as Barcelona, Costa Rica, Ireland, and more. The list of places you can travel is available online on the Elon website as there are over 20 destinations occurring in the Spring, J-Term, & Fall semesters. With that said, here are 5 reasons to study abroad at Elon:

1. Once in a Lifetime

There are few times in your life that you will get to travel the world. There are even less times that you will be able to travel the world with your friends. Studying abroad is often referred to as the most memorable experience by many Elon students. You won’t have many chances in your life to travel the world, drink, learn, and party with your buddies. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience and again should be taken advantage of.

2. Experience the Culture

While the study abroad programs are considered courses, they act more as vacations with some work. While on your study abroad you will really get to see a different culture which serves to broaden your knowledge and to better understand how the world works. The U.S. has a fairly diverse population, but traveling to another country will completely alter your view of the U.S. and the world we live in.

3. FOMO

Everybody does it, and while peer pressure and using the logic ‘everybody does it’ is not the main reason you should go, it is a legitimate one. It is something you can bond with your classmates over, and you might bond with some people you were never close with. FOMO stands for Fear of Missing Out, and this has officially been diagnosed as a real medical condition, so study abroad so you don’t get this disease.

4. Knowledge Gained

While studying abroad is more of a vacation than it is a class, you do learn a fair amount. Before going to another country, you take a 2-credit course learning about the culture and preparing for the trip ahead. In this class, you learn how the culture generally works, but there’s nothing like the experience itself. The knowledge gained will be both in the class before and during the trip when you’re actually there, and you should take full advantage.

5. Price

Let’s be honest, Elon is not a cheap school, and for the majority of students, parents are the main provider of tuition. With that said, the prices are not too expensive as the trips are all all-inclusive. For those who cannot afford to spend an additional 2-6k on top of tuition there are a decent amount of scholarships that are handed out for study abroad programs as the school really encourages these programs.

This is truly a once in a lifetime experience and should not be missed out on. It is highly encouraged to study abroad by the university and the students. The decision to do so during J-term vs. an entire semester is a big one, and should be deeply considered. Don’t be afraid to go to your parents or the school and ask to study abroad, you won’t be disappointed.
