Since it’s an elective, HLWL 1116 might seem like somewhat of a throwaway class. In reality, the class includes homeworks, quizzes, and tests, so you will have to put forth some effort to do well. The information will not challenge you too much, but you can’t skip lecture and expect to know what’s going on.

2. “I already know what ‘proper nutrition’ entails”

HLWL 1116 goes over nutrition in more detail than the simple “eat your fruits and vegetables.” You will learn concepts such as how to calculate the amount of calories you need per day, as well as possible macronutrient (protein, carbohydrate, and fat) ratios for athletes and the average person alike. If you go into this class with an open mind, you will leave with a great deal of knowledge.

3. “There won’t be any group work”

Although the class seems rather simple, you will have to complete a group project and presentation for a final grade. The professor does not choose the groups, so make sure that you know people in the class who will want to collaborate with you to create a final presentation.

4. “The class material won’t focus on science”

HLWL 1116 does not contain a ton of complicated science lessons, however, the professor will explain some concepts relating to chemistry and biology that will give you a deeper understanding of the course material. Definitely listen during class when the professor explains these topics.

5. This class will teach me how to lose weight

The class does offer some valuable information when it comes to debunking fad diet myths and offering sustainable ways to maintain a healthy meal plan, but do not follow all of the information you hear right away. Everyone has a unique body and different foods work for different people. Instead, use what you learn in this class as a tool to help you find a way of eating that works best for you.
