Last night, Monday November 27th, the Inter-fraternal council at Indiana University decided to suspend all social and new member activities until February 28th. Although a majority of time that this suspension takes place over is winter break, there will now be about two months of school where frat boys around Bloomington will be scrambling to find things to do. Here are 5 fun things that this beautiful college town has to offer everyone.
1. IU Mens Basketball
It is finally inching closer to winter, although these 60 degree days don’t really want to show it, and that means it is finally basketball season. The Hoosiers look to have a good first year under exciting new head coach Archie Miller. The roster is full of young talent that hopes to bring back the excitement to Assembly Hall.
2. Go out to eat on 4th Street
It’s a fact that everyone hears within the first 20 minutes of stepping on campus, especially if you come for an official tour, that we have some of the best ethnic food in the country in Bloomington. A quick trip down to 4th street and you are exposed to a whole new world of flavor with everything from Thai to Cajun, and anything in between. So, rather than late nights at the house ordering Pizza X at 1:30 in the morning, go for a nice meal at a more reasonable area, it will not disappoint.
3. Talk a walk around the arboretum
Although it doesn’t sound like the most fun and exciting thing to do around campus, and most people would prefer a fraternity party over a stroll through the park, not only can a nice walk through the arboretum be a great way to relax and relieve some stress, but it is also a great date spot. A nice walk through the arboretum at night can be a great way to end a great date with that special person, even if your date party for that night got canceled.
4. Go shopping on Kirkwood and in Downtown Bloomington
Whether it’s a local favorite like Tracks or a brand name chain like Urban Outfitters, there is plenty to choose from in terms of shopping, especially for some great IU gear! From cute winter clothes at Urban to that new basketball Jersey at the Indiana Varsity Shop, there are plenty of options for any shopper.
5. Take a trip to the college mall
Although it is a little bit out of the way, the college mall is actually a great escape from campus, whether you want to shop or just have a good meal. There is a great array of stores to choose from, ranging from Target to Dick’s and do much more. There is also a list of options to choose from in terms of dining as well, from Chick-fil-A and Fazolis to BJ’s and Red Robin.
Altogether there is plenty to do around our wonderful little town that these next few months will fly by! And always remember, when the party life comes back in March and things return to “normal” these 5 great things will not go away.
