Don’t beat yourself up, let your classes do it for you! When picking your classes for the year it’s important not to give yourself an overbearing workload. Knowing what classes are the hardest can be a big weight off your shoulders. Laurentian University’s hardest classes usually fall under the sciences and engineering fields, and if you are like me just thinking about these classes can make your head spin! Here are 10 of the hardest courses at Laurentian University:

1. CHMI-1032EG: ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

You can’t spell chemistry without “try”, and that is exactly what the students in this course are doing. Organic Chemistry has a well-earned reputation for being among the most difficult of classes, whether it’s the labs or the class itself that brings students stress levels up is uncertain. But to new students: don’t expect an easy A when it comes to this class!

2. CHMI-2517EL: INTRODUCTORY PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY

Don’t let the title fool you, this may be an introductory level course but it is no easy grade. Much like other chemistry courses at Laurentian University, this class is known for long lectures, intense labs, and a rather heavy workload. To art students looking for that one science class you just so happen to need, keep on walking.

3. MATH-2037EL: ADVANCED CALCULUS

If you thought the first-year calculus class was hard well then get ready for year two! Advanced Calculus has all those mind-boggling questions, and then some. The course starts by luring you in with a simple review of vectors, lines and planes before slamming the full wrath of calculus on you in a mathematic suplex. If math is not your thing, maybe avoid this.

4. PHYS-1206EL: CONCEPTS IN PHYSICS I

This class focuses on physics with specific regards to biological and clinical applications, and we all know the human body is no simple thing. The good news is, because it’s about our bodies it’s an interesting topic at least. Just get ready for long nights and intense study sessions!

5. PHYS-1905EL: ASTRONOMY

This class is extremely interesting, the topics and lectures are mind grabbing and sometimes interactive. Trips to the planetarium are among one of the best things you can experience in class. The downside of this class is that all tests are multiple choice, and for every question you get wrong the professor takes off an extra quarter mark. So, I hope you are good at fact memorization.

6. NURS-2358EL: NURSING PHARMACOLOGY

Laurentian University has an amazing nursing program, but this class has a reputation for being among the hardest in the branch. For those who don’t know, pharmacology has to do with the study of medicine, and this class focuses on its use for those who live with cardiovascular diseases. If you take this class pay close attention, you just may need to help your own heart.

7. ENGR-2227EL: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS

Engineering as a program in and of itself has a reputation for being a pain with an insane workload; this class is one of the reasons why. This class takes that regular engineering headache and kicks it up a whole new notch. With focus on temperature and how it effects this feild. It’s probably best to bring coffee to this one.

8. BIOL-2126EL: CELL BIOLOGY

This class may seem like a throwback to high school biology, with the discussion on both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. When it comes to the structure of cells this may seem like a walk in the park, but get ready for a textbook weighing as much as a small child, and a mountain of homework to match. Remember: the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell!

9. CHMI-2316EL: INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Organic chemistry may have a reputation for being among the hardest of courses, but inorganic chemistry can be just as stressful. Have fun memorising the periodic table of elements, and each elements atomic number and mass. The good news, is if you are good at memorization this class may not be so bad.

10. GEOL-2017EL: ENGINEERING GEOLOGY

Yet another course in the engineering field. This class focuses on mineralogical, textural, and compositional components of the earth in regards to the engineering field. Of course, studying something as big as our planet comes with its difficulties; so if you find yourself taking this course, remember that focus and good study habits are key!
