Living the dream in Manhattan is what many students strive for. Thus, applying to NYU is a nerve wracking process. Here are a few things you should know while applying to NYU and some things you can learn about this great place. Every university has a different application process and NYU‘s is highly competitive.
1. Make it more individual
NYU has always prioritized people with valuable and specific experiences that make them special and unique as an individual. When you write your essay, think of specific ways to show how important you are and what you can bring to the table. Stray away from generalities and absolute terms. “I think I am a good student and that NYU is great” will not catch anyone’s attention.
2. You Are Not Your Numbers
NYU‘s admissions take into consideration many factors. You do want a decent GPA and good SAT scores but these are not the full story. Many students are trying to get in NYU with more than 65,000 applicants last year. Think of answering how different are you from other applicants? how will NYU specifically get you to grow?
3. Stressful Manhattan
People come from all over the U.S. and all over the world to live in Manhattan. Keep in mind that being away from home is something to think of and reconsider if you are not about the fast pace life. Leaving to NYU may have an impact on your life choices and it is not to be taken lightly.
4. No excuses
This is not high school. If you were an A student in high school, this does not mean that you will be able to maintain that at NYU. You will be competing with many talented students and working with high achieving professors . Your lateness to class, lateness to submit homework, or other excuses might not work as much as they did in the past.
5. Think Fast
Before the semester starts, you need to be fast acting. With such a big university, you may not get the classes you want right away. Whether it comes to choosing your classes, your major,or your track, always make sure you are planning ahead. You do not want things to slip away and to not be able to complete your courses because they get full so easily.
6. Dress to Impress
When it comes to professor meetings, or just career fairs , make sure you look that you are highly interested in what they have to offer by dressing appropriately. That does not mean that you will erase your individual touch, but just make sure you look awesome!
7. Always be on time
In a fast paced city like Manhattan, time is money. When you sign for an appointment, or have a meeting, being late is usually not tolerated. This can put you in a bad position with some professors and staff. New Yorkers do get snappy easily and in an overcrowded system, do not like things getting derailed.
Applying to NYU is a stressful commitment, but remember that college experiences are not measures by money or numbers. The experiences you will have at NYU as well as the people you meet may change your life. The city in itself has a huge potential to get you growing and will definitely prepare you to that adult life.
