Being a first generation college student can be filled with a proud feeling, but sometimes embarrassment. Explaining that you are the first one in your family going to college AND graduating can bring mixed feelings to people, but it shouldn’t. Many parents go to college, and later decide to drop out, or simply have no choice. Many circumstances can occur to give someone a legit reason to have to quit school.

As the years pass, it feels like our generation becomes more judgmental. Many challenges come upon becoming a first generation college student, but it does not mean that this will prevent us from becoming successful

We lack the knowledge of what the college experience is supposed to be. Although we see through movies, tv shows, and social media posts about college, we truly do not know what we ever are expecting. Many of us would feel more comfortable knowing our parents had went to school and know some of the things we will be dealing with. Nonetheless, whether you are a first generation or not, your parents will support you and try their best to understand the many obstacles.

The stigma around being a first generation is large. This makes students want to remain invisible and lack the want for help. Like all colleges, each one has departments for absolutely anything you can imagine, and so there are multiple you can go to that will guide you.

For many of the cases, some feel guilt. The guilt can come from both the family and the child. They feel guilty because they are abandoning their families to go build a higher education for their future,or that they are sending a message to their families that they are too good for them. Some may say “why guilt”? Families may start feeling like they didn’t do enough for their child.

Regardless of the situation, we are all starting the next step to our future. Bettering our education and working hard for what we want to become one day should not bring embarrassment or guilt. Work hard, focus, and whatever the situation is, your parents will be proud, but most important, you should be proud of yourself as well.
