Healthy college

College can turn your world upside down. It’s important to stay healthy, both physically and mentally, so that you can face everything with strength. Here’s a few tips on how to keep in tip top shape.

1. Going to the Gym

Exercising regularly isn’t just about keeping in shape. Exercising is good for the body as well as the mind and is a great way to release pent up energy. Not getting enough exercise can cause your body to feel fatigued. This can affect your ability to focus in the classroom. Make it a habit to visit your local gym or run outside. Joining a school sports team can also be a great way to connect with other students.

2. Making Your Own Food

Going to college tends to make eating healthy a bit difficult. Campus food is not always the best quality and the only other options seems to be eating out. However, there is something else you can do. Learn to cook. By learning to cook, you are able to control what is going into your body and you can make sure to give your body all the right nutrients it needs.

3. Control Snacking

It’s very tempting to live your life out of instant noodles and hot pockets but the preservatives and chemicals in these packaged foods are horrible for your health in the short and long run. Try to eat your main meals regularly and fully so that you don’t feel the need to snack throughout the day. Keep healthy snack alternatives in your room like nuts and fruit if you do feel the urge.

4. Sleep Regularly

Not getting the proper amount of sleep can affect all aspects of your life. It can cause you to put on weight, feel fatigued, irritable, and hungry all the time. This of course causes its own set of problems. If you don’t get enough sleep, you risk losing focus in class as well. Try creating a set routine in which you are getting enough sleep. Keep in mind that too much sleep can be as bad as too little sleep.

5. Visit Mental Health Clinic

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. The mental health clinic usually has pamphlets and information that could be useful. Some even have stress relief days. Seeing a counselor in times of high stress can be beneficial to your well being as well.

6. Make Friends and Go Out

You need to make sure that you take time to do your work and focus on your studies. However, you also need to balance that and take time for yourself. Going out with friends and chilling out is a great way to destress. This keeps your mind happy and healthy. A healthy mind can then focus on work with more ease and concentration.

7. Drink Water

Keep hydrated! It’s the easiest thing in the world and the most important! Drinking water can help keep the rest of your life in balance. It can help ward off disease, make you more energetic, keep your skin glowing, and keeps your weight in check. Carry a bottle with you to class and take small sips throughout the day.

8. Organize Your Time

It’s important to keep a schedule and to try and stick with it so that you have time to accomplish everything that you want. College is one giant balancing act and organzing your time is a big part of that. If you want to be able to keep your grades up, hang out with friends, exercise, sleep, and all that other good stuff that leads to a healthy balanced life, you need to keep some kind of tabs on your time.

9. Keep Your Room Clean

If your room is dirty, you can be sure to catch some kind of cold at some point during the school year. Open the windows to air out your room. You don’t necessarily need to take a mop and a bottle of bleach to your floors, but make an effort to wash dirty laundry and throw out leftover food if you aren’t going to eat it. Try rearranging your room if the current set up isn’t working out.

10. Spend Time Outdoors

Getting fresh air is a great way to clear out your mind and provide good vibes to your body. Staying cooped up in doors can make your body less resistant to disease and can lead to the development of mental illnesses like depression. Take a walk, go for a picnic, or even take a quick nap in the grass.
