MATH 200 is one of the many courses required for students at Penn State who hope to be teachers one day. It sounds like a difficult 200 level course, but it’s really a lot more simple than it seems. MATH 200 is actually a general education course. Here’s everything you need to know about it:

Purpose

The purpose of this course is not to teach you how to teach math. There’s a different class for that. This class tells you why things in math work, and how to explain problems to children. The teacher emphasizes positivity in this class and explains why it’s important to be able to explain problems to kids. If math questions are confusing, kids will grow up to hate math, and you want to avoid that as much as possible. Have fun in this class; this course is all about making math fun!

Homework and Practice Problems

Don’t work ahead on homework until you’ve done the notes in class. The homework problems make so much more sense when the teacher explains in class what they mean. The teacher also provides practice problems and an answer key with questions very similar to the actual homework. The practice problems make the homework very easy, so make sure you don’t lose them!

Quizzes

Quizzes are worth 100 points, so they are a big part of your grade. The good thing is that there are so many quizzes, one bad grade would be insignificant. The teacher also drops the lowest quiz grade. Make sure to put as much work as possible on the paper because you do get partial credit for work if your answer is wrong. The teacher likes to make sure you get as much partial credit as possible, so don’t be afraid to fill up the whole page.

Exams

The good thing about exams is that there aren’t many of them. There are two exams throughout the semester, and one more during finals week. The two exams are split into two days. One day is for partial credit, and the other is no partial credit. The partial credit portion is good for putting down as much work as possible. The no partial credit portion would be similar to the partial credit portion, but there’s a separate page to write answers that would be graded as completely right or completely wrong. Make sure you double check your answers for the no partial credit portion. There are also past exams and answer keys posted online to help you practice and review. Study both the partial and no partial credit portions to help you study.

The teacher for MATH 200 at Penn State is very friendly, and she likes to make math easy and fun for you. If you think math is easy and fun, hopefully your future students will think math is easy and fun too. The content isn’t too hard, and the practice problems with answer keys make homework, quizzes, and exams so much easier. Good luck and have fun!
