With registration just around the corner, it is important to ensure that you are mentally prepared for what is to come. Picking classes is probably one of the most stressful experiences for every student no matter what university they attend. At Quinnipiac, registering for classes can be a disaster. Hopefully with these tips and tricks, the process will be slightly more bearable.
1. Know when you register
The first thing students should do is check the time that their registration opens and closes. Students can look at their time by going to self-service or web advisor if your time isn’t up on self-service yet. It is important to know that there will be more than one date available for picking classes. Pay attention to the first time and date for it will be your best chance for getting the classes you want. The time and date of registration is determined by the number of credits you have so don’t be discouraged if some of your friends have earlier pick times than you do.
2. Meet with your advisor
Advisors are there to help you. Depending on who your advisor is, they will generally set up time slots around registration time to meet with them. Take advantage of these opportunities and make the time to meet with them. They will tell you what classes you need to take and make sure you are on track with everything.
3. Be patient
It’s tempting to make your schedule as soon as the sections appear on self-service but be patient. Chances are, the schedule you make a few weeks before you register is not going to be the one you end up with. Classes are going to fill up and you will be forced the choose classes at different times and with different professors. It is important to be patient and wait to make your schedule only a few days before your registration time. Understand that things will change and that is okay.
4. Have a back up plan…
…or 5. Self-service is going to crash–it is inevitable. The website and server can’t handle 2,000 students registering at the same time. Despite the fact that this happens every year, Quinnipiac sticks with the system they have so you just have to prepare for the worst. You will spend your morning staring at a bunch of dots going around in a circle on your screen just hoping that all of your classes go through. More often than not, you will get locked out of the sections and even classes that you wanted. It is important to have multiple back-up schedules because you never know when self-service is going to stop working.
The last and most important thing to remember is to relax. Picking a schedule can be incredibly stressful, but it is essential to remember that everything is going to work out. You may not have the ideal schedule at the end of the day, but you will have a few more opportunities to revise and edit your schedule. Be on the lookout for add/drop periods because people may switch out of the classes you want to switch into.
Overall, registering for classes at QU is a very stressful time for everyone. It is important to remember these tips and tricks to make sure that it goes as smoothly as possible. Remember, it is not the end of the world if your schedule isn’t everything you had hoped for. There are always more opportunities to revisit and change your schedule.
