Biology, or the study of life, is a both very popular major and class to take at San Diego State. Because biology is at the basis of a lot of science courses, it is crucial to understand basic biology before going further into the science field. If you are required to take a few upper division biology course, these are 5 of the most popular ones to take.

#1 Biology 305

BIOL 305 is a course about Scientific Scuba Diving. This course requires two lectures and three hours of laboratory. The prerequisites are upper division standing, a swimming competency evaluation, physical examination approval for scuba diving, and waiver for scuba diving. This is an entry level scientific diver training and certification course. Theory and practical diving skills to include diving physiology, hyperbaric conditions, medical hazards, proper selection, care and operation of diving equipment, marine environment, emergency procedures, scientific diving techniques and regulations.

 

#2 Biology 315

BIOL 315 is a course about Ecology and Human Impacts on the Environment. The prerequisite for this class includes completion of the General Education requirement in Foundations of Learning II.A.2. Life Sciences. This course goes into the ecological characteristics of natural ecosystems and basic effects of human society upon those systems, emphasizing resource management, food production, global environmental problems, and future directions.

 

#3 Biology 319

BIOL 319 is a course in Evolution and the Diversity of Life. The prerequisites include completion of the General Education requirement in Foundations of Learning II.A.2. Life Sciences.  This class goes into the modern concepts in biological evolution with emphasis on examining the history of evolutionary thought, the evidence for evolution, processes and patterns responsible for the diversity of life, and consequences of an evolutionary world-view for human society.

 

#4 Biology 324

BIOL 324 a a course about Life in the Sea. The prerequisite for this course includes completion of the General Education requirement in Foundations of Learning II.A.2. Life Sciences. This class is an overview of the complexity of marine life. Diverse interactions of organisms in the intertidal zone, over the continental shelves and in the open oceans.

 

#5 Biology 327

BIOL 327 is a course in Conservation of Wildlife. The prerequisite for this course includes completion of the General Education requirement in Foundations of Learning II.A.2. Life Sciences. This is a course about our global ecosystems and their dynamics, with emphasis on sustainable human use and preservation of biodiversity. This course is not applicable to biological sciences majors.

 

These upper division biology classes are a must take at SDSU. Not only are these classes unique and interesting, but they are all a great way to become more aware of our planet and to appreciate the life around us. These classes are all very popular at San Diego State, and they are recommended by many to take!
