When it comes to feeling lonely college can be super weird. It’s like sometimes you feel like you are never alone and you get frustrated because you are literally always surrounded by people, and sometimes you feel this dark cold loneliness that comes out of nowhere. That can be overwhelming and confusing, because you’re still surrounded by all these people but you feel like the only person in the world. The best thing to do when you feel lonely and down is to practice self-love and make the most of your alone time. Here are 8 things you can do to maximize your alone time and feel good about it.

  1. Clean your dorm room

It doesn’t necessarily just have to be your dorm, you can do anything really that you’ve been putting off. Laundry, homework, returning a borrowed item to a friend, engaging yourself in these activities will help you feel sane and on track. When my dorm room is clean I feel like a brand new person I can do anything in peace because I know at least I have done something productive.

  1. Journal

Journaling is one of my favorite things to do when I am feeling lonely, because then I have the company of my thought past and present. You can read old journal entries, start new ones, draw, make art or do anything. Anything that makes you feel closest to you happiest and truest self I suggest you do. You’ll feel as though you’ve taken a weight off your shoulder afterwards I promise.

  1. Call home/facetime a friend

Sometimes we forget just how much the people we left behind influence us on the day to day basis. I find that facetiming a friend from home when i’m feeling lonely and talking to them as they go about their day motivates me and reminds me of how good I am at building friendships and taking care of myself. Not to mention parents and old friends will always be there to cheer you up and they know exactly how to do so.

  1. Get ahead in your classes

Reading the textbook a chapter ahead or even just going into your planner and mapping out your next couple of days can really help you organize and give you something to do. When you are ahead in your classes you know the academics is the last thing you need to worry about among a LONG list of things that you can be worrying about. And that my friends, is a relief.

  1. Go for a walk

I don’t know about other campuses but Ithaca College has a beautiful campus and it is very calming to go on walks. Make a playlist of your favorite songs, start melancholy and as you pile on the music finish it off with motivating exciting songs. By the end of your walk you will have brought yourself to a state of mind that is ready to conquer anything.

  1. Go to the gym!

I was never an exercise person until I came to college, but I find that going to the gym when I have free time and feel lonely helps me. Working out releases endorphins that make you feel like you’re on top of the world, and getting through good workout makes you feel like you can accomplish anything. Also it’s a FREE GYM I mean come on what else could you possibly ask for, freshman 15 is real don’t let it catch up to you.

  1.  Take a nap

A good nap solves many problems, you’ll wake up feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the rest of your day. It also allows you to stay up late in case you have any plans for the evening.

  1. Go to your rec center

The rec center is a lot of fun, they have tons of games and there are always opportunities to meet new people. I personally enjoy perfecting my ping pong talent
