10 Things Every Psychology Major Should Know

As a fourth-year psych major, I have finally begun to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Although there are many misconceptions about psychology, here’s some things to know if you really want to understand what is means to be a psych major.

1. People Love to Talk About Freud

Freud isn’t the only Psychologist. In fact we don’t even use much of what he said, but yet he is still every non-psych major’s favorite Psychologist.

2. So You Want to be a Therapist?

Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t know. That’s not the only thing that Psych majors do.

3. Way Too Many Research Articles

You’ve had to scan through research articles for variables and subjects so much that you probably don’t remember any of the context.

4. “Psychology is Easy”

Yeah we get it. Psychology isn’t as hard as Chemistry or Biology, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a real science.

5. Self Diagnosis

Med Student Syndrome is real and it happens to Psych students all of the time. You probably won’t find out about your mental disorder the day it is discussed in class.

6. You Hate Statistics and Especially Statistical Programs

You didn’t sign up to be a Psych major for the math, but it is a crucial part of the major. Try not to break your computer when you put the wrong input into SPSS.

7. Misdiagnosis

You feel the need to correct people when they say that they have OCD, ADHD, or some other disorder. “Just because you like things clean, does not make you obsessive”.

8. Over Analyzing

You’ll begin to notice that every time you meet someone you start trying to figure out what it is that made them the way that they were. Try to focus on conversations and not everyone’s mythical tragic past

9. You are all your friends therapist for some reason.

You tell people that you are a Psych major and all of the sudden you are expected to be an expert clinical psychologist. We do not know what your dreams mean. That’s not how psychology works.

10. “No, I can’t read your mind.”

If you are a Psychology major you have probably been asked about your psychic abilities hundreds of times. No we aren’t psychic. Or at least I’m not, so stop asking.

Being a Psych Major comes with its own set of unique challenges, but overall you end up gaining a very unique set of skills that are relevant to many aspects of your life. Take a psych class today at your university and maybe you’ll start your psych career soon!
