Not Adjusting to College? You are Not Alone

The transition into college for many people can be a roller coaster of emotions. Some students may fall in love with their school within the first week of attending. Others may need more time to adjust. If you are a first year student and find that you are not adjusting to college as well as the people around you, you are not alone.

College is a huge adjustment no matter what kind of person you are. There is no shame in having a hard time with this. Considering you are moving away from home, living with people you just met, and completely taking care of yourself, the adjustment can be nerve wracking. It is easy to feel like you are alone in feeling this way. A lot of students tend to feel that everyone else is adjusting faster than them. This is definitely not the case! Even though you may not see it, there are many other kids on campus that are feeling out of place. Knowing this is comforting and may help you feel better about not feeling like you belong at your school.

Everything takes time. Although this is definitely not what you want to hear while you’re feeling uncomfortable at school, it is extremely true. The key is to go out and find the people that you can relate to during your time adjusting. It helps to talk about how you’re feeling to someone who may also feel the same way.

RA’s are also always there for the students that do not adjust well to college life as well. They are there to listen to you and to help you along in adjusting to living in college.

Many people do not enjoy living on campus in a dorm room, and are uncomfortable with not being at home with their families at first. However, things will get better and you will get used to college life. If you find yourself still not getting into the swing of things after a while, do not be afraid to explore options. Whether it be going to talk to an on campus counselor, or finding a place that suits you better. There are always options to make yourself feel more at home, no matter what school you are at. Do not be afraid to explore and do what is best for yourself.
