Sport transition 938x535

As if the transition from high school to college isn’t already a major culture shock, there are things that are practically forbidden in high school that are considered completely normal in college. Below are a few examples of these things.

1.Wearing pajamas to class

In high school, everyone made a point to look presentable for the day. However, in college no one really cares about how they look. Considering you now live at your school, it is not unusual to see people attend class in their PJ’s. Image result for pjs in class

2. Going to the bathroom during class without asking

Even though it was normal and respectful to raise your hand and receive permission in high school to use the bathroom, this is not the case in college. It is almost disruptive to raise your hand and ask to use the bathroom during a lecture. It is normal to get up and go silently rather than getting permission from the professor.Image result for college classes

3. Having only 2-3 classes a day, at various times of the day

In college, there is no regular time of day for classes. Your classes can be in the morning, afternoon, or night. The beauty of this is having breaks within the day, and being able to plan your social schedule according to your school schedule and your most productive times of day. Your classes also may be spaced out with hours in between, which gives you time to get homework done. You will not have a 7 hour day that consists of sitting in classroom anymore.Image result for college classes

4. Eating alone in the dining hall for lunch/dinner

Although it was slightly embarrassing to eat lunch alone in high school, it is extremely normal in college. Most of your friends will have classes that don’t align with yours. Therefore, your free time and lunch time may not match up. Luckily, it is completely socially accepted to sit alone in the dining hall for meals. Image result for college dining hall

5. Sleep deprivation

Sorry to disappoint anyone who believed that this was a college stereotype! It is true that everyone in college goes to bed way too late. In high school, many students feel the need to be in bed by 10PM (at the latest). However, 1am is equivalent to 10PM in college. The good news is that you can choose whether or not to take 8AM, and can plan your schedule so that you can wake up a little later in the morning. Related image

These among many others are things that are completely normal in college that first year students may not know due to the difference in social norms from high school. Fortunately, you will quickly adjust and love the changes!
