Simple ways to destress board

University can be a stressful environment. While dealing with exams, assignments, review, studying and reading, it can be hard to manage all that stress. We all manage and deal with stress in our own ways., but this guide can help you take a new approach to everyday student life stress.

1.Eating well:

We are told all the time the importance of eating well to maintain good health.  Eating well is good for our body but also our mind. Scientists believe that eating  foods containing carbohydrates can increase the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone in which helps us calm down. When your body is well so will your mind. 

 

2. Exercise :

Exercise is not only a good way to maintain good physical health but also good mental health.   When you exercise your body creates this chemical called endorphins which helps with stress and makes you happier.  Whether it’s taking a short stroll outside or going to the gym, this can help lower your stress.  The University of Ottawa has two gyms , Montpetit and Minto.  They also offer other exercise activities such as yoga fitness, aqua zumba, aqua fitness, tae cardio etc… The university offers anxiety yoga at 90U, you can sign up for it on the workshop application found in uozone.  

3. Getting enough sleep :

Getting a good night rest is important in order to have a healthy mind. It is recommended to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night. When you are well rested, the mind has an easier time dealing with stressful situations and problems. If stress is keeping you up, listening to nature sounds can help relax you and make you fall asleep faster.               

4. Meditate:

Meditating is a great way to de-stress. Many studies have proven that meditating can not only improve your cognitive performances but also low blood pressure and even your heart rate.  Meditating is quite simple, find yourself a comfortable spot, close your eyes, concentrate on your breathing and picture something calming in your mind like the beach. You can even add some nice calming music or nature sounds in the background to enhance the experience.         

 

5. Taking a bath:

Taking a heat bath can relax those tense muscles. It can also help relax the mind. Add some candles, relaxing music, bath salts, bubble bath  and bath pillow to make the experience more soothing.       

6. Listen to music:

Listening to music can put you into a better state of mind. Many researches have shown that listening to music can also lower your blood pressure and your heart rate as well.  So put on those headphones and jam out to some good tunes.

 

7. Go outside :

Getting some fresh air is proven to reduce stress. In fact, nature doesn’t only just help relieve stress but it is also proven to increase healthy brain functions. In addition, people who live in more areas with green tend to have less cortisol level. Cortisol is the hormone that creates stress. It might be difficult to find time to go outside but making the time for it can really make a difference in the end.      

 

Stress is part of everyday life; in anything we do we will encounter some form of stress. Sometimes stress can be hard to shake off. Knowing these tips may help you get rid of that stressful feeling.  Remember to keep in mind that stress is a normal part of life. It is good to have a certain amount of it in order to help motivate us but it is also important to balance the amount of stress.
