1. Go to Recitation
Recitation can be a great opportunity to go over the homework and to ask questions about topics that you find confusing. While you are only required to go to half of the recitations, try to go to as many as possible. This is the best way for you to stay on top of the coursework.
2. Complete the Worksheets
There are worksheets in the back of each workbook that can be done at your own discretion. The best way to succeed in STA119 is to do all of these worksheets after every lecture topic. Not only is this a great way to prepare for recitation, but it will also help you to prepare for the tests. The test questions are very similar to the worksheet questions. Also, if you go to your professors office hours, he may require you to prove that you did the homework before he answers any of your questions.
3. Don’t slack off after the first test
STA119 is made up of two tests and a final. The first test incorporates most of the first workbook and is mainly based on plugging numbers into formulas. The second test, which incorporates the last few pages of workbook 1 and all of workbook 2, can be a little harder. The challenge with test 2 is that some of the material requires a lot of contemplation (namely for confidence intervals and hypothesis testing). Many of the problems sound similar but have a very different way to solve them. Even if you did well on the first test, don’t slack off. Each test counts for a large portion of your overall grade!
4. Sit in the front & ask questions
STA119 is a large lecture and can seem intimidating. The best way to deal with this lecture is to sit in the front. The professor is more likely to notice you and to call on you if you have any questions. He will also be more likely to ask you to answer a question, which will encourage you to pay attention. Even if you don’t want to be called on, sitting in the front is a great way to show the professor that you’re interested in the class content.
5. Do the Extra Credit in Class
While there is no grade curve, there are numerous extra credit opportunities offered through Top Hat. Many of the extra credit is in class and requires your attendance to complete them. Don’t miss out on this opportunity because the homework extra credit is not as plentiful!
STA 119 is a great class that teaches student how to solve real-world problems. It may be challenging, but you will leave the class feeling knowledgeable and ready to take on the world.
