Creative writing 6

While writing is a chore dreaded by most students, taking 39C is something that you won’t regret in the long run. Writing 39C, also known as Argument and Research, involves intensive research and argumentation. While being a GE, students could still choose to opt out of 39C and take Hum Core or follow Writing 37/39B with a creative writing course in place of 39C.

1. Class Overview

Warning: Writing 39C is a very intense course. It involves lots of readings and writing, so if you absolutely dread English, definitely opt out of it. However, if you don’t distaste writing to the core, do consider this course that allows you to walk out with more knowledge of U.S. institutions and criminal justice system.

2. Teachers

None of the writing teachers varies much from each other. Some teachers give an earlier deadline, or some assign you with slightly more reading than others. If you are lucky, you might get a teacher who assigns later deadlines or provides more help with your projects. Ultimately, however, you have to put in work and effort in order to succeed in this class.

3. Workload

You will ALWAYS be working on something for this class! In the beginning, it might be reading for a couple of chapters from The New Jim Crow or giving short answers to discussion questions. However, as the course progresses, more and more reading and writing are assigned. Or rather, you originate your own homework assignment because you do your own research. If you don’t keep up with the research process throughout the quarter, you are bound to get a bad grade. The HCP and AP projects really test your knowledge of the subject of your choice. Just when you thought you were done as you near the end of the huge projects, you are hit in the face with the ePortfolio which requires you to do a final reflection. To reduce the amount of work for your last project, it’s important that you keep track of your personal progress and work on the ePortfolio all throughout the quarter.

4. Pros and Cons

Workload is definitely a big con. Likewise, because of the intensive nature of the course, the class size is comparatively smaller. In other words, there’s no way you can escape from the fate of participation during class. The teacher would not be able to skip you in a class less than 30 people. If you are argumentative, this class gives you lots of opportunities to post opposing opinions. Likewise, if you are looking to be more persuasive, more confident in public speaking, and more critical, this is the best class for you because it really does change your perspective and gear you with an abundance of knowledge towards the end.

You might regret taking this class in its process, but as you walk away from it, you feel smarter than ever. Likewise, you have something to call your own- that HCP and AP Project that you work to perfect throughout the quarter is a perfect addition to your writing portfolio, and you would truly become an expert on the research subject of your choice.
