1. Alternative Break
Alternative Break is a program that allows for groups of college students to immerse themselves in serving the community during winter or spring break. Short term projects are assigned to groups of college students, and the project mostly focus on literacy, poverty, or racism. This is a great way to learn about the problems in your community and to help alleviate them. This program offers an intense experience and in depth experience of the serious problems affecting society.
2. Working Wardrobes at UCI
Working Wardrobes at UCI is a program that can truly change the future of others. This is a program at UCI that provides business clothing and business services to individuals that are applying to jobs, but just got through a major life crisis. Working Wardrobes does not only focus on women, but it provides resources to men, women, teenagers, and veterans. This program helps individuals get on their feet and become working employees of the community.
3. MLK Jr. Day of Service
Every year, UCI hosts a program called MLK Jr. Day of Service. During this day, UCI students team up together to volunteer and give back to the community for an entire day. Usually, UCI chooses to volunteer at the Orange County Food Bank. Volunteers assemble and package food for the less fortunate in the community. This program provides free transportation for everyone that signs up.
4. Orange County United Way at UCI
UCI students have been involved in the Orange County United Way program for students. United Way at UCI is a program where students are able to help children either in person or from their computers. UCI students helps children with projects, reading, and other opportunities. Throughout the year, United Way sets public volunteering events that help children and the community. Just last year, in 2017, the number of volunteers in Orange County grew from 1,909 to 6,564 people! This is a great program to sign up for if you are interested in helping to change conditions in the community.
