Society and Culture is a collection of fields that can either inspire people, or make them want to sleep their way through the quarter. By following the list below you should be able to spark your interest and fulfill your requirements without boring yourself to death.

1. Information Studies – Internet and Society (INF STD 30)

Obviously, the internet is something that all of us use, and most of us barely remember a time when it wasn’t easily accessible. In this course, you will look at how the internet has changed the way we live and interact with one another.

2. Geography – Globalization: Regional Development and World Economy (GEOG 4)

This class will provide an in-depth look at how the geography of landscapes effects production and how global influences affect change in economies. This is a unique way of looking at geography, so if you are interested in landscapes, but hate topographic maps, then this class is for you.

3. Religion – Origins of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity (RELIGN M50)

This course explores the three main monotheistic religions of the western world. By comparing and contrasting the three main institutions of faith, we can see how we can better coexist.

4. Ancient Near East – Women and Power in the Ancient World (AN N EA 15W)

This is my personal favorite of the classes on this list. In this course, you will examine how women in the ancient world were able to gain and retain power, as well as the societal structures that made it difficult for them to do so. Also, the professor is awesome.

5. Arabic – Islam in the West (ARABIC M107)

This course focuses on the growth and development of Islam and how it has transferred to the West. Mainly focusing on France and the United States, you will learn how Islamic communities live in the Western world.

6. Classics – Discovering Romans (CLASSICS 20)

Rome is one of the great empires to ever exist on this Earth, yet most of us know very little about how Romans lived. In this cour, e you will gain a perspective on the lifestyles and day to day lives of the people of the Roman empire. You will also get the opportunity to explore their art, writing, and architecture.

7. Cluster – Sex from Biology to Gendered Society – (CLUSTER M72)

In this course you will look at the biology of sex differences, intersex individuals, gender identity, inequality, homosexuality, law, and politics of sex. This is a topic that has been in the spotlight as of late, so if you are going to debate about it on Facebook, then you should probably have as much knowledge as possible.

Don’t let your Society and Culture requirements bore you! If you follow this list you should be able to find a class that sparks your interest and keeps you engaged for the next 10 weeks!
