UC Santa Cruz, along with the city itself, is a very large place. Traveling everywhere by foot is not always the most convenient or efficient. The UCSC campus is approximately 2,000 acres, so getting to class without another means of transportation would be quite the trek! There are several ways to make commuting and getting from one place to another easier for students at UCSC. Here are five:
Because the UC Santa Cruz campus is so large, students need other ways than just walking in order to get to classes and other destinations; one solution is biking. Several students bring their bikes and use them to get from class to class. Biking is very useful and efficient because it’s much faster than walking and you don’t have to wait around for the bus to come. In addition, there are also many bike racks around campus, so don’t worry about it getting stolen!
2) The Loop
Speaking of waiting for the bus, “the Loop” is the campus bus that loops around the campus going both directions. There are many different Loop buses and it makes commuting around the campus extremely helpful. If you’re trying to get from one side of campus to the other, students use the Loop. Some students even get on the Loop at one stop and get off at the very next. Although the Loop is quite handy to UCSC students and faculty, be weary of your time because when it’s raining or during busy times, the Loop can become very crowded and you may end up waiting awhile for a bus to come.
3) The Metro Bus
Another option is the Metro. The Metro also makes a loop through campus but goes through town as well. If you are trying to go to Safeway, the movies, restaurants, or go shopping, the Metro takes you straight to all of those locations—very convenient! However, you can also use the Metro to get from one place on campus to another. You don’t have to be going off campus in order to take the Metro.
Many colleges have partnerships with Zipcar. Zipcar is a car-sharing company that provides ride reservations to its customers and you pay for the minute, hour, or day. In order to use Zipcar, you must first create a membership online (discounts for college students) and download the app onto your phone. Next, you have a Zipcar key sent to your address. That key is the answer to everything! It unlocks the car AND pays for your gas. It’s as easy as that! Join Zipcar, you won’t regret it.
Last, but not least, Uber and Lyft. These two are on-demand transportation companies served for you benefit! Stuck at the mall with no ride home? No problem! All you have to do is get the Uber or Lyft app on your phone, sign up, search for the most convenient driver near you, and you’re set! It couldn’t be more easy.
Whether you decide to commute by walking or by bus, all five of these options are provided for YOUR convenience. They will save you time, money, and most importantly make your life much easier!
