150425 gioia club musicians tease tgbsdg

A lot of people seem to have this idea that being a music student is easy and stress free. The truth is, it’s actually a lot harder and more complex than you might think. Below is a list of 5 cons to being a music
major that just might surprise you.

1. Early morning classes

Studying what you love sounds fun…. until you realize you have an 8am every day. At this conservatory, they get you up super early for classes- especially freshman. Your day starts at 8:00 and ends late; it’s just part of the gig. You’ll get used to it in time but it still isn’t the most enjoyable thing.

2. Practice hours

A lot of the majors at this conservatory are required to obtain practice hours. This means you set aside time to go to the practice rooms and play your instrument. You then have to keep track of your hours and turn it in for credit. Usually this type of practice demands at least 20 hours a week.

3. Busy schedule

These music students are some of the busiest ones around. You’ll usually find them in the practice rooms or in class, and when they’re not they’re either out performing or working on their own music. This school requires a lot of your time inside and outside class, and it takes a while for the students to adjust.

4. No time to be sick

These students are always performing and are always expected to be in their best health. Especially if you are a vocal student, losing your voice is not ideal and it makes practicing and getting your work done very hard. While most students are able to still complete their daily activities, music students sometimes are not able to if they are sick or have a sore throat.

5. Careers

It is no secret that making it in the music industry is tough- just because you go to school for it doesn’t guarantee you anything. These students have to get as many internships as humanly possible to make all the connections they can, otherwise their dream career might not become a reality.

All in all, being a music student is pretty much a trade off. There are a lot of good things about it, but there are also a lot of not so good things.
