While some of us may still have a couple more finals to truck through before they’re on break, many of us at CU Boulder are finally free from our schoolwork and ready to enjoy winter break. There are lots of things in Colorado that make winter here different from winter anywhere else. If you’re wondering what to do now that you don’t have any more homework or tests to worry about, make the most of your free time with the best ways to spend your winter break in Boulder.
If there’s one thing that Colorado is known for, it’s skiing. If you’re like most other Buffs, chances are you can’t wait to get out on the slopes again. What better way to spend your month off than to grab a couple of friends and head up to Vail or Crested Butte? Lots of ski towns offer some substantial holiday discounts and college passes, so don’t let your budget stop you from “shredding some powder”, as the kids say.
If you don’t consider yourself coordinated enough for skiing or snowboarding, you can still have fun in the snow with sledding or snow tubing! It’s a tradition for many Colorado families to head up to Winter Park to find some of the best sledding hills around. Boulder has plenty of steep hills as well, so if you aren’t in the mood to treck up into the mountains, just grab some buddies and some sleds and find a good spot anywhere in Boulder.
3. Shopping on Pearl Street
The infamous outdoor Pearl Street Mall is beautiful any time of year, but it gets a holiday makeover during Christmas time. The trees that line the beautiful brick walkways are covered in Christmas lights, and it’s a perfect time to take a stroll through the unique shops and restaurants. You can get some holiday shopping done while enjoying the beautiful scenery – lots of stores have holiday (and student) discounts.
4. Take a Walk Down Boulder Creek
A popular spot all year round, the Boulder Creek is a staple of Boulder’s beautiful scenery. This winding pathway turns into a winter wonderland during December, and it costs nothing to enjoy running, walking, or just exploring its trails. For a college student with a limited budget, this is a perfect way to get outdoors and relax.
5. Cozy Up and Stay Indoors
If the idea of spending time outside in the freezing cold isn’t up your alley, have no fear. You can always rent a good book from the Boulder Library, grab some coffee from the Laughing Goat, and spend your break snuggled up in the comfort of your home. There’s nothing wrong with spending your free time unwinding with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book.
Now that we can all relax and forget about the stress of finals, there are so many wonderful ways to spend winter break as a CU buff. Whether you choose to spend your month of free time indoors or out in the snow, there’s something in Boulder for everyone to enjoy during their break. Enjoy your time to relax before next semester with these five activities everyone will love.
