Get involved banner

UConn is a huge school, and it’s perfectly okay to feel lonely. The best way to become more comfortable on campus is by getting involved. I know that this may sound redundant; your orientation leader and FYE mentor must have told you to get involved a thousand times, but it’s true. Being involved on campus is the best way to get the most out of UConn, and truly is a lot of fun!

1. The Involvement Fair

The easiest way to learn about how to get involved on campus is the involvement fair. I’m sure you’ve heard about it a lot since the beginning of the semester, but honestly all you have to do is walk through Fairfield way to find clubs that interest you. Most likely the people in those clubs have the same interests as you, and you’ll probably meet some of your closest friends through the involvement fair.

2. Joining Greek life

First off, Greek life is not for everyone and that is okay. Each chapter has their own values and ideals that they believe in, so most likely you’ll find people you connect with. There are many negative stereotypes about Greek life, however I recommend not listening to these rumors because they are all false. Greek life is a great way to meet people who will support you, and treat you like family; you just have to put in the effort!

3. Late Night

UConn offers Late Nights usually on Fridays and Saturdays, and it’s a great way to meet people. There is karaoke, wings, and sometimes free stuff; what else could you want! Especially for young huskies, late night is a great event, and everyone should experience it at least once during their time at UConn.

4. Get a job

UConn offers students many jobs on campus. The pay is actually pretty good, and they always make sure to see your school schedule before they schedule you for work. Most likely you’ll meet your coworkers, and you’ll get paid while you’re doing it. Honestly it’s a win-win situation.

5. Try to go outside your comfort zone

All of the options above require you, husky, to go outside your comfort zone. Obviously that is easier said than done, however it is really worth trying. College is all about finding yourself, and the best way you can get the most out of your experience is by going outside your comfort zone.

College can be a hard place to navigate, and of course everyone wants to fit in. Trust me fellow husky, you will find people that like you for who you are, you just have to go out of your way to meet them. Don’t worry too much though, just use some of the options above and you’ll find your place at UConn!
