A really interesting and fun class to take is HDFS 2100. In this class, students learn about infancy through adolescence. They are also able to experience virtual parenting which is a really fun part of the class. Here are 5 course concepts for HDFS 2100.

1. Prenatal

The first topic that is discussed in this class is prenatal development. In HDFS 2100, the course covers information on the basis of how the mother focuses on her fetus. There are so many different techniques and diagnoses that are covered in this topic, and it is very interesting to learn about. The My Virtual Child experience for the class also covers the different decisions a mother can make during this period.

2. Infancy

The next topic discussed in HDFS 2100 is the infancy period. This period is one of the cutest times in human development, and there is a lot of changes happening. Infants are always learning something new, or are building up their new found skills. In this course different types of attachment styles are discussed, which is also addressed in the virtual reality experience. The different choices that are made in the virtual reality portion determines each child’s attachment style. These attachment styles determine many concepts for the child later on in life.

3. Young Childhood

The next developmental period is the young childhood stage. In this stage children are starting to express themselves more than the previous stages. They are also trying to assert their autonomy to their parents, which can cause some tension in the family. In the course students learn about the different disorders in the young childhood stage. They also learn about the role changes once the child starts school. This is a truly interesting topic to learn about.

4. Middle Childhood

The next stage in the course is the middle childhood period. While this stage is not the most interesting to learn about it is very important to understand. At this stage children are no longer cute, and some are starting to go through puberty. The children start to want more freedom, and are willing to fight their parents to get to their goal. While the children can be annoying, the course teaches students the reasons for their new behavior as well as how to combat it.

5. Adolescence

The final period in HDFS 2100 is adolescence. This stage is one of the most interesting to learn about because so much is happening. At this point parents should be giving their teens some freedom, and the teens are learning how to become adults. They are also trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives which can be hard. In the course, students learn about the hardships teens deal with as well as how parents should act around them.

Overall this course is one that every Husky should take during their time at UConn. While it is a very interesting class it also has material that will help students when they are older, and start to have families. Another reason to take this course is that it is very easy. If you’re a Husky looking for an easy A, as well as some great lifelong information, then take HDFS 2100.
