Health and Wellness Services at the University of Maryland

As the flagship institution of the University of Maryland System, obviously student health and wellness is something the University of Maryland, College Park takes very seriously. There are many health and wellness services located right on campus for student convenience.  Most are concentrated directly in the center of campus. Here are just a few services the university provides!

1) University Health Center

Come here for minor aches and chills

This is the primary place students will go if they are in need of basic medical services such as filling prescription drugs or getting a cold diagnosis. It is more of a medical clinic than anything else with its own drug counter and several nurses on call. It obviously cannot handle more urgent situations.

2) The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCC)

At least you're in good hands if you need this service!

This specialized unit of the University of Maryland Medical Center is located in Baltimore Maryland is one of the top cancer treatment centers in the country. UMGCC is known for providing coordinated care from teams of specialists—medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, pathologists, nurses and other team members who have expertise in particular types of cancer—who consult on each patient’s case and develop a joint treatment plan. Researchers at the center are also on the forefront of new cancer drugs, offering over 100 clinical trials.

3) Counseling Center

Go here for help with mental wellness.

The UMD counseling center provides free and confidential therapy to help UMD students manage personal, social, and academic challenges. The center is staffed by licensed psychologists so don’t worry about students being tasked with diagnosing mental health problems! In an urgent emergency, staff will be on hand to evaluate well-being and recommend next steps. There is even an after hours hotline to provide 24/7 access to any student in need of counseling.

4) Adventist Healthcare Washington Adventist Hospital

For emergencies only.

If students are ever in serious need of immediate medical attention, the University of Maryland will probably send them to the nearest hospital with an emergency room, which happens to be this hospital. This 204 bed care facility is located in Tacoma Park MD  and offers a range of health services such as cardiac and vascular care, maternity services, cancer care, surgical services including robotic surgery and orthopedics and emergency services.  It’s a shame the place only has a 3 star rating.

5) Dog therapy

Cute therapy dog

And now for something less serious, the University of Maryland offers therapy sessions for students to manage stress by playing with dogs on Mckeldin Mall! The health center offers these services for students to relax a bit. A ton of students make use of dog therapy since it is a great excuse just to see cute dogs. Say hello to the two golden retrievers and a labrador!

Those were 5 resources you can make use of on or near the University of Maryland campus. Have a fun morning or afternoon with dogs while decreasing your stress levels. Make use of free and confidential services at the UMD counseling center. Fill up on prescription drugs and get that cold checked out at the health center. A healthy Terp will know where to go when in need of help. Will you?
