If you don’t join a living and learning community, dorm selection for your freshman (and possibly sophomore year) is a lottery. You could end up in Bursley (notoriously known for being the worst dorm ever) or Bates and be subjected to the seclusion that living up on North Campus ensures. (Be ready to spend an ungodly amount of money on Ubers and Lyfts if you plan on hanging out in Central on the weekends – you definitely won’t want to catch the bus at 2:00 or 3:00 am.) Get placed on The Hill (even though it’s a bit of a walk) and you got either get super lucky (MoJo is great! It has one of (if not the best) dining halls on campus) or extremely unlucky (none likes Markley because of the roach infestation).
Get lucky enough (blessed by the gods type of lucky), and you could end up on West Quad., undoubtedly the best dorm in the University of Michigan.
Why? Check it out:
1. Because of the location
It’s right next to South Quad. (which has one of the nicest dining halls; it’s a 10-minute walk from the IM Building (a gym so incredible that all of the athletes go use it); it’s connected to the Union (where you can go study, snack or chill whenever); and a 10-minute walk from most buildings in Central Campus (which might sound like a lot, but is actually nothing when compared to the other dorms).
2. Because of the people
West Quad. houses one of the living/learning communities of the university: the Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP for short). It stands form diversity, community service, and leadership, so the members are down to earth and hard working. Also, it houses a lot of varsity athletes, among a variety of other amazing people.
It’s social (very), but people settle down to work when it’s necessary.
Work hard, play hard was invented in West Quad, for sure.
3. Because of the building’s design
There are hundreds (that’s an exaggeration, but you get the point) of study rooms that you can reserve for however long you want to study (or watch Netflix in – you can connect your laptop to the TV screens with an HDMI cable). There’s a game room, a media center (there’s a huge TV – it’s great for movie nights), a community learning center (filled with computers and four printers), a multicultural lounge, a community kitchen… the list just keeps going on and on and on…
West Quad. also has two gorgeous courtyards where you can relax in by sitting in one of the deck chairs or laying a blanket on the grass.
All in all, West Quad. is the place to be your freshman year. With great a location, people and perks, it has everything and anything that you need to have fun and work hard. Hopefully, if you’re lucky enough, you’ll get to live there one day.
