If you’re an engineer or someone studying Physics – good luck by the way – you’ll most probably have to take Physics 140 in U of M. As the month of January soon comes to an end and February looms around the corner, so does the first midterm for the class. Here are the top 4 topics you can expect to see in the exam.

### 1. Vectors

Vectors are everywhere in the world of physics. Everywhere. They’re one of the most basic concepts in the field of study, so make sure you understand them well. You don’t want to go into the first exam (or any physics exam for that matter) without knowing what they are and how to use them.

### 2. Newton’s Laws

There are three widely known and used ideas that are referred to as Newton’s Laws in the world of physics. Memorize them. The first is that an object in motion stays in motion unless acted on to act otherwise. The second, force is equal to mass times acceleration. And the third, for every action there is an equal an opposite reaction.

### 3. Projectile motion

All of that mumbo jumbo you took in high school about throwing things in certain angles and calculating their ranges and distances, remember it? Well, if you don’t, you better brush up on it. Even though it’s not one of the most prominent topics in the first exam, you don’t want to lose 5-15 points for not studying it.

### 4. Forces

“Forces” might seem like a broad topic (because it is), but it’s added for a reason: there’s a lot of it. Make sure to study everything from normal force to friction to weight. They’re all going to be on the exam (and will probably somehow affect 80% of the problems).

All in all, the first physics midterm isn’t jam-packed with material. It’s mostly stuff that students learned about in high school, but don’t let that make you procrastinate. Get a head start on your studying and you’ll ace the midterm without breaking a sweat.
