Whether you are staying in Columbia, MO. over the summer for your lease, to get in-state tuition, or just to work, there are plenty of fun things to do to keep you occupied. Here is a list of some things to do at the University of Missouri during the summer.

1. Truman’s Pond

The rec center has an amazing outdoor pool that should be open all summer long. So, once you get out of class or off work you can head on over and soak up some sun at the pool. They have chairs that float in the water and music is always playing over the speakers, it is a great way to relax and spend your summer.

2. Hiking

If you don’t mind getting a little dirty and a little sweaty, then hiking in CoMo is definitely for you. You could explore caves, woods, and creeks and take some really artsy pictures.

3. Stephen’s Lake Park

Stephen’s Lake Park starts right near where the campus ends. It has a beautiful lake, walking trail, and some great reading spots along the water. If you just really need to relax after a hard day, this park is the place.

4. Be a Summer Welcome Leader

While becoming a Summer Welcome Leader is very competitive and an extensive process, it is very rewarding. If you have to stay in Columbia to get in state tuition, this is a great way to spend your time, make some money, and make a lot of new friends. You would spend the whole summer introducing incoming students to Mizzou and having a lot of fun while doing it.

5. Do Yoga at the Health Center

The health center offers yoga classes during the summer, it is completely free and all the supplies are given to you when you get there. It’s a great way to destress and really focus on what’s important. Plus it really helps to calm you down if you start feeling homesick.

6. Rag-Tag Cinema

The Rag-Tag Cinema is movie theater in downtown Columbia that plays independent films and sometimes stuff from local filmmakers. It offers a different movie watching experience and is a really nice way to spend two hours.

7. Take some Gen-Ed classes

While this might not be the most exciting thing to do over the summer, it is very practical. If you’re already staying in Columbia it makes sense to take some of the classes you may not be looking forward to taking in the fall. If you take them in the summer you’ll be ahead and you’ll have more time to do what you want when all your friends come back for the fall semester.

8. Work as a CA or DA

Since some people will be living on campus during the summer the resident halls are going to need Community Advisors and Desk Attendants. The pay is good and they offer you room and board. This way you can earn some money, not worry about rent, and meet new people.

9. Volunteer to Build Your Resume

Volunteering is not only very rewarding but looks good on your resume. The University of Missouri has countless opportunities to volunteer both on campus and around the city of Columbia. It’s always a good idea to spend your time helping others.

10. Go to Sparky’s
