Although sociology is a slightly recent subject in the world around us, it is an important one to learn about when presented the opportunity. University of New Hampshire students are lucky enough to have a great sociology program, and every student should take at least one sociology class during their four years at UNH. Here are 5 reasons why students should take sociology at UNH:
1. It will expand your knowledge of current events.
Sociology is everywhere, and the sociological imagination can be applied to almost every interaction people may come across during every day life. If you enroll in Introductory Sociology (SOC 400), you will use your sociology skills to evaluate real life crises and events happening in the world. You will be up to date on world news, and get to learn some theories behind why these things happen.
2. You will learn more about the people around you.
The field of sociology is mainly based on human interactions and interactions between societies. Everyone is a part of some sort of society and everyone interacts with others during their day to day life. With some sociology knowledge under your belt, you can better understand why people act the way they act, what may help form certain societies you may be apart of, etc.
3. You can learn the “why” about certain parts of human interaction.
If you have ever been curious as to why certain things happen between people or between societies, sociology classes will explain these things. With many different theories formed about societal behavior, you will be able to think deeper into the why’s of things and make sense of interactions you see and take part of in every day.
4. The professors are interested and enthusiastic and will help you learn more.
When taking more advanced sociology classes such as Drugs and Society (SOC 620) and Family (SOC 520) you will have the opportunity to meet many professors that are experts in what they teach. You will be able to learn a lot more about sociology in different aspects of life on top of forming great connections with professors.
5. It can be applied to everyday life for the rest of your life.
You will always come across human interactions no matter what your occupation may be, and you will always come across different types of societies. Taking a sociology course will provide you with information that you will use for the rest of your life.
All together, sociology is filled with great knowledge for every college student to touch on at least once during their college career. There are courses that can reach anyone’s interest, and the professors are genuine and enthusiastic. Enjoy your semester and your sociology courses!
