Students entering their freshmen year of college experience a lot of nervousness and anxiety. Moving into a new place, meeting tons of new people, handling a college work load, etc., can all make college challenging for freshmen students. First years often have a lot of questions about how their time in college will go. Here are 5 questions and answers for freshmen students at The University of Rhode Island.
1. What are the dorms like?
The University of Rhode Island has many residence halls to choose from for freshmen. Most of the dorm rooms are larger than other dorms you may find at different universities, and the buildings are mostly newly renovated. Normally, freshmen will be paired up with a roommate, usually 2 roommates. You can choose these or choose to have a random person. Overall, dorm life is fun and totally tolerable at URI.
2. What are the dining halls like?
Every student that lives on campus is required to have a meal plan. Within these meal plans, students get unlimited swipes into either dining hall on campus, along with guest swipes, grab & go options, and sometimes Ram dollars. There are two dining halls to choose from, (Hope Commons and Butterfield), and students are also able to get food from the Rhody Market, or the Rams Den with their grab and go swipes. Overall, you will be fed well and will enjoy mealtimes at URI!
3. What is the workload like and how do I stay on top of it?
Depending on your major, workload in college varies. Overall, however, you will spend less time in classes and more time completing out-of-class assignments. It is important that you leave your procrastination habits in high school, because work will pile up fast if you do not stay on top of it. Try your best to do your work as it is assigned to you, therefore you will not have to scramble and feel stressed.
4. Where can I receive academic help if I am struggling?
There are many campus resources for students who would like to receive help with their schoolwork. For starters, every professor is required to have scheduled office hours for students to stop in and ask any questions they have. On top of this, most courses have a TA (teachers assistant) that is there to assist you with anything throughout the course. Carothers Library also offers student tutoring sessions, a writing center, and other study groups for students seeking help.
5. What kinds of extracurricular activities can I get involved in?
There are countless student orgs and activities that freshmen students are encouraged to join. For starters, Greek Life is very popular on campus and is something that anyone could get involved in. Rush week is towards the beginning of first semester. If you do not want to be in a fraternity or sorority, there are also intramural sports, fitness classes, and other clubs that freshmen students should look into. It is important to get involved on campus in order to assure a great college experience!
The University of Rhode Island quickly begins to feel like home for many freshmen students. Fortunately, the students of URI have a great campus to adapt to and will enjoy their time as a Rhody Ram. Good luck, freshmen!
