There are many undergraduate programs students can join to gain knowledge, experience and skills in order to get a job or make money with after graduation. Below are some programs that allow students to develop creative skills in game design that can eventually be utilized to make money.
B.S. in Computer Science (Games)
The goal of this program is to supply students with a strong grounding in computer science and a cross-disciplinary background in game development. Topics in this program include game production, visual design for games and interactives, computer animation, video game programming, game hardware architectures, game engine programming, serious game development, and introductory and intermediate game design. Students will also need to complete a two semester-long final game project. Additionally, students can expand their education with their choice of graduate programs within the field.
The requirement for the degree is a total of 128 units. A cumulative grade point average of C (2.0) is required for all courses taken at USC. Students are also required to take all upper-division courses applied toward the major.
Game Design Minor

The game design minor will teach basic iterative design and prototyping skills. Game audio is a very important aspect of the gaming experience. This minor will teach students how audio forms in the game system and how composition is interpreted. A theoretical backing and skills in audio design will prepare students to design successful audio for the games industry.
To be eligible for the game audio minor, a student must be in good academic standing, have a declared major, and get permission from the Interactive Media Division (SCA 222). A minimum of 24 units is required for the game audio minor, including 6 lower-division units and a minimum of 16 upper-division units
Game User Research Minor
Game user research is all about improving game player interaction and experience. It is considered a critical aspect of game design and development. Students will be able to learn about management of playtests, usability tests of the software, and technology and rules. After completing the minor, students will be able to design for optimal player experience, analyze large batches of data, and build applications.
To be eligible for the game user research minor, a student must be in good academic standing, have a declared major, and get permission from the Interactive Media and Games Division (SCI 201). A total of 24 units is required for the game user research minor, including 6 lower-division units and 18 upper-division units.
3D Computer Modeling and Graphics Minor
3D video games are becoming more prevalent nowadays. This minor prepares students to apply 3D computer graphics across a wide range of industry applications. This minor merges theoretical concepts with state-of-the-art techniques. Majority of the courses will be hands-on courses to help build core foundations through advanced technologies. This also gives students an opportunity to build up their portfolio for when they apply for jobs to showcase their skills.
