An additional way of reviewing material and problems, Supplemental Instruction sessions are a unique way to interact with friends and mentors to learn about the subject and  prepare for exams. So, what are Supplemental Instruction sessions and are those even valuable than that of the LEC Center?

What are SI Sessions?

SI Sessions are mentor-driven sessions in which students can work together with each other as well as the mentor to understand the concepts presented in class, review and work through problems, and prepare for exams. Students who have attended SI sessions reportedly have performed really well on the exams as well as have achieved higher GPAs than those of other students in the same class. Overall, statistics and data provide evidence that these group sessions offer unique opportunities for students to do well and excel in the field.

How are SI sessions in relation to the LEC center?

Considering the similarities, both ways offer help in regards to the student. Students definitely do well after having assistance from SI sessions or the LEC center. These students do not only build an affinity to use these resources but also spread the positive effects to other students as well. By achieving higher GPAs, better grades, fun interactions, students build an interest to use these resources and spread the positive motivational factors to other students as well.

What are the differences between SI sessions and LEC Center?

Unlike SI sessions, LEC center does not offer group sessions in which groups work together to explain the concepts, problems, and solutions. This lack of interaction may affect the student’s ability to completely understand the material and the concepts. In addition, by working together, students can build their network of connections and can utilize this network to ask small, quick questions. However, similar to the those of the LEC Center, there are also downsides to SI sessions. SI sessions only exist at particular times on particular days; therefore, if there were to be conflicts with the SI sessions, students cannot necessarily attend the same SI session with their group of friends. Unlike SI sessions, the LEC center is open from 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM, so students can always go to the LEC center whenever they are free (visit article on LEC Center for more details).

So, are Supplemental Sessions even beneficial? Considering this information as well as data that have been provided, it is definitely proven that SI sessions offer unique ways for students to grow in their respective fields. Although specific times can interfere with the student’s schedule, SI leaders are constantly increasing the volume of SI sessions on all days to improve the ability of students to attend the sessions and learn from the mentor and their peers. Therefore, whenever time permits, students should definitely check out the SI sessions and gain valuable experience.
