Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public, land-grant, research university with its main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The school has a 71% acceptance rate. With around 25,000 students, there are many sport teams students can join whenever they need a break from studying! Here are 10 of the top sports teams at VTech.

1. Basketball

The Virginia Tech Hokies men's basketball team is an NCAA Division I college basketball team competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team's first intercollegiate game was played in the year 1909. Since then, the team has made it to the NCAA tournament 11 times and their most recent time was in 2019.

2. Bowling

If you are looking for a fun and stress-free sport then the bowling club is for you. They take all experience levels, from a rookie to a true competitor. Don't worry if you are new to the sport, they will teach you! They practice weekly on Tuesday and Thursday nights at NRV Superbowl in Christiansburg.

3. Billiards

The billiards club is an intramural sport that brings people together who are interested in 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, Straight Pool, One-Pocket, Bank Pool, Snooker, Bumper Pool, Billiards, Carom, Russian Pyramid, Kaisa. The team meets at BreakZONE in Squires Student Center every Wednesday from 7 PM - 9PM. This is a great sport to play if you want something relatively stress free while also being competitive and constantly learning.

4. Alpine Ski

The club is coed with both a men's team and a women's team. They compete in the Southeastern Collegiate Ski Conference, which is a very prestigious competition. The club is great because they cater to all skill levels even if you are a beginner and have never skied before. The team competes during the spring semester of Jan and Feb.

5. Fencing

The Virginia Tech Fencing Club (VTFC) is a student-run Recreational Sports Club that was established in 1979. The beginner lessons start in September for the fall and you can find the club meeting in War Memorial Gym Dance Room. The club takes all skill levels and is open and competes with both men and women in competitions with three Olympic weapons (foil, epee, and saber).

6. Water Polo

The Water Polo team invites everyone (even those with no experience) to join their sport. They have separate teams for men and women. The team(men's) competes in both fall and spring but the fall season is more competitive of the two.

7. Ultimate Frisbee

Ultimate Frisbee is a fun sport to participate in. They meet twice a week at the drill field. The team competes and travels around 3-4 times a year on the East Coast. The game is a great sport as it teaches speed, endurance, and hand-eye coordination/teamwork.

8. Volleyball

The women's volleyball club is a membership-based try out-group. There are two teams: the maroon or orange. Each team has around 10-12 team members. The team has practice Monday to Thursday with weightlifting times, tournaments and even local competitions.

9. Soccer

Soccer is a sport that has both men and women's teams. The teams compete on a local level as well as across the country. It is a great sport for keeping in shape and getting to play outdoors. The sport is a great way also to get scouted and drafted into a possible pro career.

10. Golf

The golf team is a great sport to get into as it is both competitive and a leisure way to be outdoors. The club competes for the national title against many impressive schools. The club is a great way to learn sportsmanship and enjoy the fresh air with your team.

Virginia Tech with over 25,000 students has a wide range of different types of sports to participate in. You can take leisurely sports such as golf and disc golf or get an incredible workout from volleyball and soccer. These are only 10 different sports but make sure to check out all of the sports available to get a better idea which sport is best suited for you.
