Your first time being at Virginia Tech and away from home can sometimes be a hit or a miss. You either love it or hate it. Some call it their home away from home and others are dying to be back home. But here are some things that you should expect to happen your first semester at Virginia Tech.

Sore legs the first few days on campus

Unless you drive a car and know the bus systems down to a tee, your first few days at Virginia Tech will entail a lot of walking that you’re probably not used to.

Seeing new faces everyday

Unlike high school where you know basically everyone, at Tech that won’t be the case. You will cross the drillfield and see someone that you probably won’t see again ’til two years later, and even that is a slim chance.

Not doing so hot on your first exams

Exams in college are nothing like a high school test where one can barely study and still get like an A. Don’t be discouraged if you find yourself getting C’s, B’s, or even failing exams your first few weeks.  You will get the hang of studying and prepping for exams, and your scores should increase throughout the semester.

Pull an all-nighter

Whether it be from staying up all night to study for the exam you have tomorrow or partying all night, you’re probably going to pull at least one all-nighter by the end of your first semester.

Doing something you have never done before

There is always something going on at Tech, whether it be free food being served at the Graduate Life Center or a free concert at Squires. There’s always something to take part of on campus. There will be opportunities to do things that you have never done before, and you will be glad that you did.

Being locked out of your room

This is something you would want to rather avoid, but it’s something you should expect to happen during your first semester. So don’t be surprised when it does.

Finding that special person

College is a whole new world compared to what you are used to back home. Tech has over 30,000 students, so simply put – expect to find that special person that gives you butterflies in your stomach when you see them.

Having a ridiculous amount of work to do

There will be one night in the semester that somehow ends up with you having to complete 3 papers, 2 exams, 4 different homework assignments, and two lab reports due tomorrow. Oh, and you haven’t started any of it. You don’t how this much work piled up on you… but it did, so now you’re slowly dying on the inside.

Is having a college education worth it?

And the experience of that one night you’re swamped with so much work and studying to do can be pretty discouraging. You’ll be feeling stressed out and will probably think to yourself: “Do I really need a college degree?”.

Briefly, you should expect amazing things in college, but be prepared to experience some misfortunes as well. Hopefully your happy experiences outweighs the misfortunes during your first semester at Tech!
