UNIV 1824, or more commonly known as Pathways, is an excellent class to take as a freshman at Virginia Tech. The course is literally made for new incoming students. You’ll Discover Your Campus Resources
Your tuition pays for a lot. It pays for so much. In fact, most students don’t even know how much it covers. Pathways will show you everything that Virginia Tech has to offer you as a student. The class features a number of guest speakers and field trips to various resource centers designed specifically for new students. From career services like resume/portfolio building to a free writing center, there are so many resources available!
Forces You to Explore New Events
What’s the point of being surrounded by diverse people, various interest groups, and fun extracurriculars if you never explore them? UNIV 1824 requires you participate in 2 main events. One on-campus event offered by the school and another event that incorporates diversity of some sort. These activities will help you to gain a broad understanding of your school and the types of people there.
You’ll Explore Different Career Paths
As much as 80% of college students change their major at some point in their college career. In UNIV 1824, you will be exposed to all of the different colleges Virginia Tech has to offer. Twice a month, guest speakers from a different colleges come and present on what they have to offer and why you may want to pursue a career there. The knowledge is valuable and there is nothing better than having your questions answered by a student ambassador.
Helps Your Transition from High School
It is a freshman recommended course for good reason, although anyone can take it, really. A portion of the mandatory attendance workshops goes over tips for those who are new to college, which can be especially useful. These workshops include, but are not limited to, Time Management Bootcamps, Successful Note-Taking, and Effective Study Strategies. Going to these workshops is not only helpful but an easy A!
What makes this course a truly amazing elective, is that you get a grade for learning about things you actually need to know! The main assignments in the class are 250-word essays – which are essentially you telling your professor what you learned from a particular task. This is probably the easiest coursework available for a college student. The coursework is minimal, classes are fun and engaging, and you are preparing yourself for a successful college career as a Hokie!
