Through the study of Sociology, you will learn that the world is not exactly how you think it is. That same theory applies all the way down to the mechanics of the class, it won’t be exactly what you thought. Below are a few tips to help you overcome and be successful throughout the course.
1.Take sufficient paper notes.
Studies show taking paper notes by hand over typing are much more effective in absorbing course content. With a computer, you’ll be able to type at a much faster rate and tempted to write down every last word that leaves your professor’s mouth. Also, the exams are open note that only allow for the use of non-electronic aids. If you take hand written notes, you will eliminate study time & save on printing costs.
Do the readings.
Essentially, your tuition pays for you to hear the professor talk, and he, more often than not, talks about the readings to great length. The readings can be done outside of class, you can’t listen to your professor speak later. If you decide to skip the readings you’ll be left behind and slightly confused during the lecture. Also, the quizzes given at the end of the week are based on the readings, so the more acquainted you are with the readings the better you’ll do on the quizzes.
Pay Attention to Lectures
The class is quite a large one which means 2 things. You don’t have to pay attention because your professor won’t notice and it’s very easy to get distracted. It’s not uncommon to look around and see a few classmates staring into their cell phones, completely oblivious to the lecture. You have in class questions called TopHats on the topic at hand to ensure you’re paying attention. TopHats account for 20% of your overall grade and you are graded on correctness, not completion, so paying attention is very necessary!
Have an open mind
This course, if anything, will make you see the world around you differently. In order to get the most out of class, you must have an open mind to new concepts and theories that may not seem plausible. If you hold onto your own opinions so tightly that you reject the professor’s teachings, you will learn absolutely nothing and ultimately fail the course. Remember, you are here to learn and expand your mind.
With the right professor, this course can be fun and one of the most interesting lectures you’ll have. The course is introductory so don’t get used to these massive class sizes, they get much smaller once you go into your major. Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll be more prepared for success. Just remember, take notes, pay attention, do those readings!
