There are an abundance of course to take at WLU, some of which that are more difficult than others. If you are a student looking for a class to keep ways from or a student just looking to challenge themselves, then here are 10 of the Hardest Courses at WLU!
Highlighting challenges in an external business environment can be as difficult as solving one. By looking at competitive analysis, and an in-depth examination of political, economic, social, and technological factors; students are expected to use their knowledge in cases to solve certain problems while addressing their personal research, writing throughout required lab dates for the course. From the beginning of the semester, this makes it extremely hard for students, who are introverted and are not comfortable with presentations, as well as being in such a competitive program already where most students want to show their leadership skills; this makes difficulty for roles within group work, presentation and projects you will do in this course. Not to mention that the testing involves a lot of memorization and a mandatory mark for you to be able to pass and count towards getting your co-op. I have many friends who are business majors and after hearing about their experiences taking the tests for BU111 they said they were happy it was over, and they would never take it again.
By studying molecular symmetry, introduction to Molecular Orbital theory, structure and stereochemistry of typical inorganic compounds not only in general classes, but also within lab times, this course involves a lot of memorization as well as a lot of time to competently learn about the concepts of inorganic chemistry and wrapping your heads around the theories in what we use on a day to day basis. Anything biological is difficult non- the less because of the structure in which questions are based on tests, midterms etc. at the competitive program at WLU. If you are a student trying to pursue a career in chemistry, the focus of this course will be a great asset within getting your degree, but for students without a background in this information it will be a difficulty to catch up to the degree where you will be comfortable with the knowledge and experiments in which you will be conducting.
Learning the concepts and principles of transmission (Mendelian) genetics and population genetics can be difficult without using analysis and interpretation of genetic examples and situations to illustrate how genes are inherited, the resultant phenotypes and the effects of gene interactions. Where appropriate, interpretations will be extended to a discussion of the underlying molecular basis or genomic organization.
With three hour lectures and two labs a week, this course begins with the introduction to the fundamental principles of physiology, including: membrane transport, energy metabolism, cellular communication and homeostasis. In the lab, you will put together components using computer simulations and human physiological recordings. Both are key elements in obtaining success throughout this course; careful not to slip up on your readings and assignments. It can be a detriment to your final grade if you do not properly understand the main concepts.
Be prepared when entering this course to learn, solve and understand everything to do around calculus within a three hour lecture period. With topics such as: series, convergence, limits, continuity, differentiability, and the Riemann integral, this is surly a rigorous to get your head into. Let’s just say, for an English major like me, numbers are definitely not my specialty. Mind you, if you enjoy testing your limits within the realm of Calc, than I say study hard and if you’re having trouble, just go see your professor during office hours. Your professors are there to help you understand the material more than you think. With the wise use of utilities, any student in calculus can obtain a grade they are sure to be proud of.
From understanding intervals such as augmented sixth, diminished sevenths and making cords through understanding pitch as well as being aware of different cords and the sounds they make, music theory can come easy to some and quite difficult to others. It is as if it is the math and science of music, and if you are unable to knowledgably obtain these concepts, it will make it almost impossible to understand the crucial skills needed for improvisation. These concepts also are crucial to understanding the theory behind melodies, harmonies and the use of certain techniques utilized as a structural back bone for music such as polyphony and motifs that are found in classical and modern music. Therefore this course is not only challenging, due to the fact of the concepts learned but is necessary for any aspiring musicians as it possess the key elements of music.
If you have not studied law before, I would not recommend starting now. Not only is law and legislation long and at most times confusing, but law students spend a lot of time on memorization and becoming comfortable with the concepts surrounding the idea of justice. This course in particular focusses on conflicts between liberty and equality, as well as contemporary debates surrounding the work of John Rawls. If you are more of an introverted person, this course may also bring difficulty during arguments and case studies when debating on topics which you are evaluated.
If you guessed by the title, yes this course introduces you to the concepts of microcomputer hardware and software applications in an environment completely hands- on. Having early knowledge and experience with this information is helpful in successfully keeping track with the information you learn within the syllabus given. Although some have said it can be quite easy to get excellent marks on the labs within this course, some have said what bites them in the end is the memorization and prioritization to study for this course for midterms and final exams being a large part of the final mark. If you are as I would say, “Technologically inept,” like me, I would not recommend taking this course, but if it is a field that interests you by all means compute away!
This course has its positives and setbacks, but as you indulge your way through the principles of classic and instrumental conditioning, you will get to learn the contemporary reasoning and observation of animal behaviours. Those who believe in animal rights activism may have a difficult time during this class as you read and come to understand things such as animal sensitization, extinction, and punishment. This may be sensitive to those who become enraged by these topics. With two midterms and multiple assignments, this course carries many deadlines and memorization to successfully cultivate the mark in which you may be striving for. Don’t be fooled by the smaller picture you get by the title, this course consistently expects it’s answers directly from text giving many readings and time put into the course in general.
After taking this course myself, and talking to other students who were in my class I came to the conclusion of the difficulty this course has by looking at the concepts we are expected to connect with fictional literary genres. This included graphic novels, poetry and plays from different eras. I find that most people viewed this course to be most difficult because in a way, it makes you look too far into addressing forms of conflict to create this dystopia effect of crime and catastrophe within the written works we read, discuss and view in our own minds. For me, I find it actually ruined fiction reading and my ability to use my imaginative skills while following it. If you are easily able to withdraw yourself out of a non-fiction type of thought than this is definitely a course you will enjoy but presuming most people enjoy non-fiction, it will be hard for you to get through this course and it’s readings.
