Living in Waterloo comes with both it’s perks and it’s downfalls. Every student at every school can condone to this, but here it what it’s like living as a student in WLU. Keep reading to see if you agree or attest to any of these means day-to-day living generalities yourself!
1. Healthy Habits
Unlike those delicious home cooked meals you would get from your parents in the comfort of your home, you are bound to either trying your hardest at making something similar with whatever you have left in your fridge from your last grocery trip, or you are left eating instant noodles and KD cause hey, University Life right? Too bad other schools don’t have Wilfs to save the day! Did you know that you can pay for Wilfs food with your Onecard? It’s the very popular bar and grill on campus, and you should consider trying the spin dip!
On the plus side, living with your friends is like having a slumber party every night of the week. Remember in high school when you use to beg your parents to have a sleepover with a friend? Well now it’s simple, and you don’t need to worry about where they sleep either, because they all have their own beds! Plus it’s nice to have them there when you need emotional support if you hit any bumps along your university path whether that be relationships, grades, or just not remembering what happened that other night when you got home from Phil’s!
3. The City of Students
Waterloo’s population itself is made up of a large percentage of students. The city is practically made and crawling with all of us. This makes for an intriguing place to live as most people you bump into on the street are within your age group. It’s not exactly “Suburbia.” This however, is extremely nice for when you need something to eat late at night and you know that pizza place is still open unlike it would be back home at this time of night. Especially when you are having a party or gathering, there usually aren’t many noise complaints cause all of your neighbours are on the guest list anyway!
4. On a Budget
Living in Waterloo comes with decent cost of student living depending on the range you are looking for. Compared to other places like Toronto it is extremely low. However, this comes with a downfall if as a student you are also working to pay your own rent. Sometimes balancing school and work to still live near school to be able to continue going becomes an unbalanced situation. Cheers to becoming adults!
5. Sufficiently Surrounded
Student living for WLU do get a plus though, as the campus is on the list as one of the smallest universities in Ontario, you can walk from one end to the other in 10 minutes flat. This means, surrounding campus is all student housing. So unlike larger universities, it takes us no time at all to get to campus or class. Mind you, us hawks get so use to it time to time that it feels like a struggle even just walking form the Athletic Complex to Bricker Academic… and all we need to do is cross the Soccer field in the middle of campus!
6. Convenience at your Service
Your personal, educational and medical needs are in close range as a student at WLU and are easily accessible. Not only does the WLU campus have their own wellness centre, but they also have the convenience store and campus store in the ARTS building in case you need any student necessities from tonight’s dinner, Tylenol for that massive headache you got from your last lecture. You also can’t forget the library in helping you study for that final! You can say everything you need is at a pretty close proximity to one another.
7. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
Let’s be honest, Student living at WLU just as much as any university comes with its bad and memorable decisions! University life at WLU is filled with drinking, making new friends, having fights with friends, partying, choosing to go to McDonalds at 3AM, deciding to wait in the Phil’s line when its almost to the street lights, studying last minute or that midterm, and even embarrassing ourselves on and off of campus by accidentally… (or purposely) stepping on the Hawk! Sometimes even in front of that person who may totally have the hot’s for! Nonetheless, these choices and experiences make a memorable time at WLU for everyone and helps you make better decisions in the future… but it also helps you let loose to!
All in all, living as a student at WLU comes with both perks and downfalls, but the main point to take away is all of the fun and experience that will come from living as a student in general. So back your bags, take the drive & live the life of a University student. You will be glad that you did!
